The best air purifier for a home with asthma is the Levoit Vital 200S-P. It is a fan and filter with no ionizer, California lists it as a mechanical air cleaner, and AHAM Verifide rates it at 250 cfm of smoke CADR for a 388 square foot room. For a bigger living space, the Levoit Core 600S-P is filter-only too and certified for about 610 sq ft.
Asthma changes the priorities. Ozone is a lung irritant, so we left out purifiers whose main cleaning stage is an ionizer, photocatalytic coating or other electronic method, and favored models on California's certified list as mechanical. We also included a purifier with a deep carbon filter, because smoke and chemical odors are triggers too. A purifier reduces airborne triggers; it is not a treatment, and it does not replace an asthma action plan from your doctor.

- Auto Mode
Cons
- Thin carbon for heavy odors
- $59.99 filters
California lists the Vital 200S-P (LAP-V201S) as a mechanical air cleaner, and its filtration is a pre-filter, HEPA-type main filter and carbon. Its certified smoke CADR gives a 16 by 20 ft living room about six air changes an hour. Read the Vital 200S-P review.
Best for large rooms
Levoit Core 600S-P
391 to 394 cfm of certified smoke CADR from a filter-only machine with a laser sensor.

- Laser PM2.5 sensor
- App
Cons
- Large footprint
- Higher energy use than the Blueairs
For an open plan living space, the Core 600S-P is the largest filter-only machine in this guide. Its laser sensor raises the fan during cooking, when smoke and particles from the stove can trigger symptoms.
Best value
Honeywell HPA300 (HPA304)
300 cfm of certified smoke CADR, filter-only, CARB-listed as mechanical, with a five-year warranty.

The HPA300 is a straightforward choice: lots of certified airflow, no electronic stage. Change the carbon pre-filter every three months as Honeywell recommends; it is the part that takes the edge off smoke and odors. See our HPA300 review.
Best premium pick for smoke and chemicals
IQAir HealthPro Plus XE
A sealed, filter-only machine with a deep gas filter and four-year HEPA life; no published CADR.
- Smoke CADR
- Not published (about 300 cfm top airflow, IQAir)
- Room size

- Gas filtration
- V5-Cell gas filter
Pros
- Real gas filtration for smoke and VOCs

- No AHAM CADR
If smoke, cleaning products or traffic fumes are triggers, a thin carbon layer is not enough. The HealthPro Plus adds IQAir's V5-Cell gas filter, and California lists it as mechanical. We cannot compare its particle performance with AHAM figures because IQAir does not publish a CADR. Read the HealthPro Plus review.

The 200M is the version of Coway's Mighty without the bipolar ionizer, which makes it the Coway to choose for a bedroom where someone has asthma. See the 200M review.
How we chose purifiers for asthma
We started with AHAM-certified CADR from the AHAM Verifide directory where it exists, then checked each model's cleaning method against the California Air Resources Board's certified list, which classes air cleaners as mechanical or electronic. We kept only filter-only designs, and added one premium model with substantial gas filtration.
Asthma buying guide
Why avoid ozone-producing stages
Ozone irritates the airways, and the EPA notes that it can make asthma worse. California limits certified electronic air cleaners to 0.050 ppm of ozone, and the EPA advises against ozone generators altogether. Ionizers and similar stages vary in how much ozone and other byproducts they produce, which is why we prefer filter-only machines for a home with asthma. If you already own a purifier with an ionizer, check whether it switches off. Our ozone guide explains the rules.
Particles and gases are different problems
The EPA lists secondhand smoke, mold, dust mites and pet dander among common indoor asthma triggers. A HEPA filter catches particles from all of these. Gases from smoke, cooking, cleaning products and new furnishings pass straight through HEPA media and need carbon or other sorbents; a thin carbon wrap saturates fast. For gas-heavy homes, look at the IQAir above or the Austin Air HealthMate Plus.
Source control first
The EPA's guidance treats air cleaners as an addition to source control, not a substitute. For asthma that means no smoking indoors, fixing moisture that feeds mold, keeping pets out of the bedroom, allergen-proof covers on mattresses and pillows, and ventilating while cooking. A purifier then handles what is left.
Smoke CADR matters more for asthma
Fine particles, the kind smoke is made of, reach deep into the lungs. We ranked on smoke CADR here, and suggest sizing for six or more air changes an hour in the bedroom of someone with asthma, especially in wildfire season. See our wildfire smoke picks.
What to skip
- Ozone generators sold as air purifiers or "activated oxygen" machines.
- Ionizer-first purifiers without a switch, in an asthmatic person's room.
- Scented purifiers and air fresheners. Fragrance is a common irritant; some purifiers include scent cartridges.
- Medical claims. A purifier does not prevent asthma attacks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best air purifier for asthma?
A filter-only purifier sized for the room. Our pick is the Levoit Vital 200S-P: no ionizer, listed by California as mechanical, and AHAM certified at 250 cfm smoke CADR for 388 sq ft.
Can air purifiers make asthma worse?
Purifiers that produce ozone can, because ozone irritates the airways. That is why we recommend filter-only models; the EPA advises against ozone generators sold as air cleaners.
Do air purifiers help with asthma?
They reduce airborne triggers such as smoke particles, pet dander, pollen and mold spores in the room where they run. The EPA treats them as an addition to source control, not a substitute, and they do not treat asthma.
Should someone with asthma avoid ionizers?
It is the cautious choice. Ionizers and similar electronic stages can produce ozone and other byproducts; filter-only purifiers do not.
Do I need carbon in an asthma air purifier?
If smoke, cooking fumes or chemical odors are triggers, yes, and more than a thin carbon wrap. Gases pass through HEPA filters; only sorbents such as activated carbon remove them.
