For wildfire smoke, the best purifier is the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max: AHAM Verifide rates it at 435 cfm of smoke CADR for a 674 square foot room, and it draws just 46 watts, which matters when it runs day and night for a week. For the most certified airflow per dollar, the Honeywell HPA300 delivers 300 cfm for 465 sq ft. For a filter-only machine at large-room scale, the Levoit Core 600S-P is certified at 391 to 394 cfm.

The EPA's advice for smoke days is to create a clean room, keep windows and doors closed, and use a portable air cleaner sized for that room, choosing one with a high smoke CADR and little or no ozone. Wildfire smoke is mostly fine particles, PM2.5, which HEPA filters catch well. Its smell and some gases need carbon, which helps but is secondary to particle removal on a bad air day.

1

Best for wildfire smoke

Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

The most certified smoke CADR per watt in AHAM's directory at its price, and a SmokeBlock filter option.

Smoke CADR
435 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
674 sq ft (AHAM)
Power
46 W (Blueair)
Ozone
CARB certified electronic air cleaner

Pros

  • Huge certified smoke CADR
  • Cheap to run around the clock
  • Particle sensor auto mode

Cons

  • Electrostatic stage
  • Filters load faster during smoke events

In a 300 sq ft clean room with the door shut, the 211i Max gives about 11 air changes an hour on high, enough to pull indoor PM2.5 down fast after the door opens. AHAM estimates 256 kWh a year in normal use, and its low wattage keeps a week of 24/7 running cheap. Read our 211i Max review.

2

Best value

Honeywell HPA300 (HPA304)

300 cfm of certified smoke CADR for 465 sq ft from a plain, filter-only box.

Smoke CADR
300 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
465 sq ft (AHAM)

CARB mechanical

Pros

  • Most certified smoke CADR per dollar
  • Filter-only
  • R filters sold almost everywhere

Cons

  • Loud on high
  • No sensor

The HPA300 has long been the go-to smoke-season purifier because it moves a lot of certified air for the money and its filters are easy to find when shelves empty. Keep a spare set of R filters before fire season. See our HPA300 review.

3

Best filter-only for big spaces

Levoit Core 600S-P

391 to 394 cfm of certified smoke CADR with a laser PM2.5 sensor and no electronic stage.

391 to 394 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
606 to 611 sq ft (AHAM)

Fan and filter

Pros

  • Big certified airflow
  • Laser sensor shows PM2.5
  • Filter-only

Cons

  • Uses more energy than the Blueair
  • Large

A laser sensor that displays PM2.5 is genuinely useful on smoke days: you can see indoor levels fall after you close up the house. For a filter-only machine at this size, the Core 600S-P is the pick.

4

Best for a bedroom clean room

Levoit Core 400S-P

231 to 234 cfm certified for about 360 sq ft, with a laser sensor and 38 W.

Smoke CADR

Pros

  • Sized for a bedroom clean room
  • Efficient
  • Toxin Absorber filter option for smoke smell

Cons

  • Not enough for a whole open plan floor
  • Filter interval not printed

The EPA suggests a bedroom as a clean room for many families. In a 14 by 16 ft bedroom, the Core 400S-P gives over seven air changes an hour on high. See the Core 400S-P review.

How we chose wildfire smoke purifiers

The EPA's guidance on wildfire smoke points buyers to the smoke CADR, and so do we: every pick is ranked on AHAM-certified smoke CADR from the AHAM Verifide directory. We added efficiency, because smoke events mean running a purifier around the clock for days, and ozone status from California's certified list, because the EPA advises choosing a unit that produces little or no ozone.

Set up a clean room

The EPA's guide to creating a clean room recommends picking a room everyone can fit in, ideally with few windows and doors, closing it up, and running a portable air cleaner sized for it. It also advises against activities that add particles, such as frying food, burning candles and vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum, and keeping the room cool. If you have central air, set the HVAC fan to recirculate and fit the highest-MERV filter your system can take; our MERV 13 guide covers that.

The EPA's DIY box-fan option

When a commercial purifier is not available, the EPA has tested do-it-yourself air cleaners built from a box fan and furnace filters. In its research on DIY air cleaners, a box fan with one 1 inch MERV 13 filter delivered a CADR of 111, and a Corsi-Rosenthal box with four 1 inch MERV 13 filters and a cardboard shroud delivered 401.

The EPA's cautions matter: use a box fan made in 2012 or later, which has a fused plug and thermal cutoff, with a UL or ETL mark; replace filters often, because the DIY units were almost completely ineffective with dirty filters; and treat a DIY cleaner as a stopgap, not a permanent alternative to a purifier of known performance.

Size for more than five air changes

For wildfire smoke, AHAM recommends a smoke CADR equal to the room's floor area in square feet, rather than its everyday two-thirds rule. With 8 ft ceilings, that is 7.5 air changes an hour.

Stock filters before the season

Smoke loads filters quickly, and stores sell out during fire events. Buy a spare filter set early. Watch the purifier's filter light and the indoor PM2.5 reading, if you have a monitor: when levels stop falling after you close up, the filter may be full.

Know your numbers

The EPA's Air Quality Index for PM2.5 rates a 24-hour average up to 9.0 micrograms per cubic meter as Good and above 35.4 as Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. An indoor air quality monitor shows whether your clean room is staying clean. See PM2.5 explained.

What to skip

  • Ozone generators and ionizer-only devices. The EPA advises low- or no-ozone units.
  • Coverage claims without smoke CADR.
  • Old box fans for DIY builds; the EPA says their fire risk is unknown.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best air purifier for wildfire smoke?

The Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max: AHAM certified at 435 cfm smoke CADR for 674 sq ft on 46 W. The Honeywell HPA300 (300 cfm) is the best value.

Do air purifiers help with wildfire smoke?

Yes. Wildfire smoke is mostly fine particles that HEPA filters remove well. The EPA recommends a portable air cleaner with a high smoke CADR in a closed clean room.

Does a DIY box fan air purifier work for smoke?

EPA research measured a CADR of 111 for a box fan with one MERV 13 filter and 401 for a four-filter Corsi-Rosenthal box. The EPA calls DIY units a stopgap, recommends fans made in 2012 or later, and says to change filters often.

How do I make a clean room for wildfire smoke?

Choose a room with few windows and doors, close it up, run a purifier sized for it, avoid frying food, candles and vacuuming, and keep it cool, as the EPA describes.

How often should I change purifier filters during wildfire season?

More often than usual. Smoke loads filters quickly; the EPA found DIY cleaners almost completely ineffective with dirty filters. Keep a spare set and change when the indicator or falling performance says so.

Should I run my air purifier on high during wildfire smoke?

Run it on high when you first close up the room and when smoke enters, then on a level that keeps indoor PM2.5 low. A monitor shows you when.
