The best air purifier for pets is the Levoit Vital 200S-P. AHAM Verifide rates it at 289 cfm for pollen, the figure that best describes large, light particles like dander, and 250 cfm for smoke, for a 388 square foot room. A second U-shaped inlet and a Pet Mode are designed to keep fur from matting the main filter. For a smaller room, Levoit's Vital Pet Pro is certified for 229 sq ft.

This guide is about dander and hair. If smell is the bigger problem, see our pet odor guide, which ranks on carbon rather than airflow. And if a family member is allergic, the EPA's first advice is to keep the pet out of that person's bedroom; a purifier helps most there.

Best for pets

Levoit Vital 200S-P

The highest certified pollen CADR among mid-size picks, plus a side inlet and Pet Mode for fur.

Pollen CADR
289 cfm (AHAM)
Smoke CADR
250 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
388 sq ft (AHAM)
Hair handling
Second inlet, washable pre-filter

Pros

  • Pet Mode raises airflow on a schedule
  • Pet Allergy filter option
  • Flat back sits against a wall

Cons

  • $59.99 filters
  • Infrared sensor

In a 16 by 20 ft living room, the Vital 200S-P's 289 cfm pollen CADR gives almost seven air changes an hour for large particles. Vacuum the pre-filter weekly in shedding season so fur does not choke the airflow. Our Vital 200S-P review has a three-year cost table.

2

Best for a smaller pet room

Levoit Vital Pet Pro

A pet-focused Levoit certified for 229 sq ft, for a bedroom or den where the pet sleeps.

Pollen CADR
163 cfm (AHAM)
Smoke CADR
148 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
229 sq ft (AHAM)
Hair handling
Auto-clean pre-filter (Levoit listing)

Pros

  • Mechanical filtration (CARB)
  • Sized for a bedroom
  • Pet-specific design

Cons

  • Less airflow than the Vital 200S-P
  • Integrated energy factor 3.9

AHAM lists the Vital Pet Pro (LAP-P501S) at 148 cfm smoke, 152 dust and 163 pollen for 229 sq ft. Levoit's listing describes an auto-clean pre-filter, aimed at the hair that builds up on any purifier in a pet home.

3

Best for dander and smell together

Winix 5510

253 cfm of certified smoke CADR and a granular carbon panel for the odor that comes with pets.

Pollen CADR
247 cfm (AHAM)
Smoke CADR
253 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
392 sq ft (AHAM)
Hair handling
Washable pre-filter, clean every 14 days

Pros

  • Real carbon bed
  • About 12-month filters
  • PlasmaWave can be switched off

Cons

  • Odor sensor ignores dander
  • Clean the pre-filter every two weeks

Where dander and smell are both problems, the 5510's AOC carbon panel does what the thin carbon layers on most purifiers cannot. The manual asks you to clean the pre-filter every 14 days, which in a pet home is the part to keep up with. See our 5510 review.

4

Best for large rooms with pets

Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

453 cfm of certified dust CADR for 674 sq ft, with a washable fabric pre-filter sleeve.

Room size
674 sq ft (AHAM)

Washable fabric pre-filter, $12.99 spare

Pros

  • Huge certified airflow
  • Pre-filter sleeve washes easily
  • 46 W

Cons

  • Electrostatic stage
  • Particle + Carbon filter lasts up to 9 months

The 211i Max's fabric sleeve is its pre-filter: it catches hair on the outside of the purifier where you can see it and vacuum or wash it. For a big open room with several pets, it is the strongest certified option here. Read the 211i Max review.

Cons

Pet homes go through filters faster, which makes Coway's $59.79 yearly set attractive. Coway's figures are its own, as Coway was not in AHAM's directory when we checked. See the Mighty review.

How we chose pet purifiers

We ranked on AHAM pollen CADR first, from the AHAM Verifide directory, because pollen is the large-particle test and pet dander behaves more like it than like smoke. Then we looked at how each purifier deals with hair, a practical problem AHAM's test does not measure: pre-filter design, how easy it is to clean, and filter cost, since pet homes use filters faster.

Pet purifier buying guide

Dander versus hair

Pet allergens are proteins in skin flakes, saliva and urine, according to the EPA's asthma trigger guidance. The flakes are tiny and light and stay airborne for a long time; a HEPA filter catches them. Hair is large and heavy, falls to the floor within seconds, and mostly ends up on the pre-filter. So a pet purifier needs certified airflow for dander and a pre-filter you can clean for hair.

The pre-filter is your weekly job

A pre-filter matted with fur cuts airflow, and the purifier's real CADR falls well below its rating. Vacuum it weekly in shedding season, or as the manual says (Winix's says every 14 days). A purifier whose pre-filter is easy to reach gets cleaned; one behind three clips does not.

Where to put it

Put the purifier where the pet spends its time, and keep it off the floor area where the pet sleeps so fur is not pulled straight into it. If someone is allergic, a second purifier in their bedroom, with the pet kept out, does more than a large one in the living room. Our placement guide covers spacing.

Pollen CADR for about 5 air changes an hour, 8 ft ceilings. Our arithmetic.

A purifier is half the job

Dander settles on furniture and carpets and is stirred up again. Vacuuming with a HEPA vacuum, washing pet bedding and keeping pets off beds do as much as the purifier. A purifier then catches what gets into the air.

What to skip

  • Purifiers with hard-to-reach pre-filters in a heavy-shedding home.
  • Scented "odor neutralizer" cartridges if anyone is sensitive to fragrance; they mask smell rather than remove it.
  • Ionizers as the main stage. They can make dander stick to walls and furniture instead of a filter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best air purifier for pets?

The Levoit Vital 200S-P: AHAM rates it at 289 cfm pollen and 250 cfm smoke CADR for 388 sq ft, and it has a second inlet and Pet Mode designed for fur.

Do air purifiers help with pet allergies?

They reduce airborne dander in the room where they run, which can lower exposure. The EPA also advises keeping pets out of the allergic person's bedroom, and cleaning helps as much as the purifier.

Do air purifiers remove pet hair?

Some airborne hair, mostly on the pre-filter. Most hair falls to the floor quickly, so vacuuming does more for hair than any purifier.

How often should I clean the pre-filter with pets?

Weekly in shedding season, or as the manual says; Winix's 5510 manual says every 14 days. A clogged pre-filter cuts airflow.

Which CADR matters for pet dander?

Pollen CADR is the closest match, because dander flakes are larger than smoke particles. Smoke CADR still matters if fine particles or smoke are also an issue.

Where should I put an air purifier for a dog or cat?

In the room where the pet spends most time, not right beside its bed, and a second unit in any allergic person's bedroom with the pet kept out.
