The Wave Plus does the two jobs most homes care about after particles, radon and ventilation, in a battery-powered disc you can mount on a wall. It skips PM2.5, and costs less for it.
Enter your basement's size and how damp it is. The calculator uses ENERGY STAR's sizing guide and rounds up, as ENERGY STAR advises, to a 25, 35 or 50-pint class.
Basements are damp, dusty and often open plan. A basement purifier needs real carbon for the musty smell and enough certified CADR for a big room, and it works best alongside a dehumidifier.
A purifier can catch mold spores in the air and soften a musty smell. It cannot stop mold growing. Here are the certified picks for the first job, and what to do about the second.
Our top pick is the Midea Cube 50: a certified 49.67 pints a day at ENERGY STAR's 2.01 L/kWh, with a large bucket and a compact, extendable body. Here are six picks by job.
A continuous radon monitor shows your short- and long-term averages without lab fees. These are the best we found, and how to use one alongside the EPA's test-then-confirm advice.
Air conditioning dries the air as a side effect of cooling. In damp basements and mild, muggy weather it does little; a dehumidifier does the job. In humid summers, many homes need both.
The old FFAD5033W1 is no longer in ENERGY STAR's current list. Frigidaire's current 50-pint-class unit, the FHDD5034Y1, matches the Midea Cube's certified numbers; buy on price and features.
The listing says 4,500 square feet and 80 pints max. ENERGY STAR says 32.46 pints a day under the DOE test. It is a good mid-size unit, as long as you size it on the certified figure.
Radon testing is cheap and simple, and the EPA recommends it for every home. Here is how to do it properly, read the result, and decide whether you need mitigation.
The Cube's extendable body and large bucket solve the two things people hate about dehumidifiers: emptying them and storing them. The 50-pint model is the one most basements need.
Efficiency is liters of water per kWh. Our top small-space pick, the avylo ADC018, is certified at 2.05 L/kWh and an estimated 257 kWh a year; here is the ranked list and how to read the label.
A hygrometer above 60% confirms it. Condensation, musty smells and mold are the clues. Ventilation, a dehumidifier and fixing leaks are the cures, in that order of cost.
EPA's answer is below 60%, ideally 30 to 50%. But mold grows where surfaces stay wet, so condensation and leaks matter as much as the room reading.
We found no new Vremi 50-pint listing on Amazon US and no Vremi models in ENERGY STAR's current certified list. These certified units do the same job today.
