The most energy-efficient portable dehumidifier we found on Amazon is the avylo ADC018: ENERGY STAR certifies it at 24.50 pints a day and 2.05 liters per kWh, flags it as meeting its Most Efficient criteria, and estimates 257 kWh a year, about $44 at the 2025 US average electricity price. For a 50-pint-class job, the Midea Cube 50 meets ENERGY STAR's 2.01 L/kWh floor at 49.67 pints a day. For a whole basement or sealed crawlspace, the AprilAire E080 is certified at 2.35 L/kWh.

Every figure here comes from ENERGY STAR's certified product data, not from listing titles. We ranked picks within each capacity class, because a small unit always uses less electricity than a big one and the right comparison is efficiency at the size you need.

  • 4.2-gallon bucket (per the Amazon listing)
  • Nests for storage (Midea)

Cons

  • Not Most Efficient
  • Higher annual energy than small units, because it removes more water
  • No pump

For a wet basement, a 25-pint unit running flat out is less useful than a 50-pint unit cycling. The Cube is certified at 49.67 pints a day and 2.01 L/kWh, exactly the ENERGY STAR minimum for the 25.01-to-50-pint class; the Frigidaire FHDD5034Y1 and Midea's pump model carry the same IEF. ENERGY STAR estimates 515 kWh a year, about $88.58.

Skip it if your space is only moderately damp; a 25-pint Most Efficient unit will use less electricity. See our Midea Cube review.

5

Most efficient whole-home

AprilAire E080 Whole-Home Dehumidifier

The highest IEF of our picks, for large basements and sealed crawlspaces with a proper install.

DOE capacity

  • 6-year warranty (per the Amazon listing)

Cons

  • Much higher purchase cost
  • ENERGY STAR advises professional sizing and installation
  • Whole-home capacity is tested differently from portables

Whole-home dehumidifiers have their own ENERGY STAR criteria, set by case volume: at least 2.22 L/kWh up to 8 cubic feet and 3.81 above. The E080 is certified at 65.00 pints a day and 2.35 L/kWh with the Most Efficient designation, and an estimated 632 kWh a year (about $108.70). It drains through a pump or pipe, so it can run unattended for months.

Skip it unless you need whole-basement or crawlspace control; ENERGY STAR says whole-home units should be sized and installed by a professional. See dehumidifiers for crawlspaces.

How we chose

We downloaded ENERGY STAR's certified dehumidifier list (571 models when we read it in November 2026), matched models to current Amazon listings by model number, and ranked them by integrated energy factor within each capacity class. Annual energy and the Most Efficient flag are ENERGY STAR's; costs use the EIA's 2025 US average of 17.2 cents per kWh.

How to read dehumidifier efficiency

IEF

The integrated energy factor is liters of water removed per kWh of electricity, under DOE's test procedure. Higher is better. Two units with the same capacity but IEFs of 1.70 and 2.05 differ by about 17% in electricity for the same water removed.

ENERGY STAR's classes

ENERGY STAR Version 6.0 minimums, effective October 1, 2025.

Portable50 pints/day and above3.30
Whole-homeCase volume up to 8.0 ft³2.22
Whole-homeCase volume above 8.0 ft³3.81

Note the jump at 50 pints: most "50-pint" portables are certified just under 50 (49.67 for the Cube, 49.71 for the Frigidaire FHDD5034Y1), which keeps them in the 2.01 class.

Using less electricity with any dehumidifier

  • Set it to 50%, not 35%. ENERGY STAR says the optimum is generally 30 to 50%; every point lower costs more run time.
  • Close the space. ENERGY STAR advises keeping doors and windows closed while it runs.
  • Give it airflow and keep it clean. ENERGY STAR says to keep units without top discharge away from walls and furniture, and away from dust that clogs coils.
  • Fix the water source. EPA says the key to mold control is moisture control; a leak or poor drainage will keep a dehumidifier running.
  • Size it right. ENERGY STAR says it is better to oversize than undersize; an undersized unit runs constantly. Try our sizing calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most energy-efficient dehumidifier?

Among models we matched to Amazon listings, the avylo ADC018 had the highest certified efficiency in the small class at 2.05 L/kWh, and the AprilAire E080 the highest whole-home efficiency at 2.35 L/kWh, per ENERGY STAR.

What is a good IEF for a dehumidifier?

Above ENERGY STAR's minimum for its class: 1.70 L/kWh up to 25 pints a day and 2.01 for 25.01 to 50. Models flagged Most Efficient do better than that for their class.

How much electricity does a dehumidifier use?

ENERGY STAR estimates about 257 to 283 kWh a year for efficient 25-pint units and about 515 kWh for a 50-pint-class Midea Cube, roughly $44 to $89 at the 2025 US average price.

Do ENERGY STAR dehumidifiers save money?

ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers use about 20% less energy than conventional units to remove the same moisture.

Is a bigger dehumidifier less efficient?

Not necessarily. Larger units use more electricity because they remove more water, but they can have the same or higher IEF. Compare IEF within the size you need.

What does ENERGY STAR Most Efficient mean?

It is a designation ENERGY STAR gives to certified models that meet stricter efficiency criteria than the standard label. The flag appears in ENERGY STAR's certified product data.
