For airborne mold spores, the best purifier is the Honeywell HPA300: AHAM Verifide rates it at 300 cfm for pollen-sized particles and 320 for dust, for a 465 square foot room, and mold spores fall in that size range. For a room where you want the fan to respond on its own, the Levoit Core 400S-P is certified for about 360 sq ft with a laser particle sensor.

Before you buy, know the limit. The EPA's guidance is blunt: the key to mold control is moisture control. Mold grows on damp surfaces, not in the air, and a purifier only catches the spores that become airborne. If you can see or smell mold, find and fix the water, dry the area, and clean or remove the moldy material; the EPA suggests a professional for areas larger than about 10 square feet. A dehumidifier does more than a purifier to stop mold coming back.

Our top picks at a glance

  1. 1. Best for mold spores

    Honeywell HPA300 (HPA304)

1

Best for mold spores

Honeywell HPA300 (HPA304)

High certified airflow for spore-sized particles, a carbon pre-filter for mustiness, and simple controls.

Pollen CADR
300 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
465 sq ft (AHAM)
Carbon
Carbon pre-filter, every 3 months
Sensor
None

Pros

  • Most certified airflow per dollar
  • Mechanical filtration (CARB)
  • Five-year warranty

Cons

  • No sensor
  • Pre-filter changes every 3 months

Most mold spores are a few microns across, comparable to the pollen and dust AHAM tests with. The HPA300's 300 cfm pollen and 320 cfm dust CADR handle them well in a large room. Its carbon pre-filter takes the edge off a musty smell; change it every three months as Honeywell recommends. See our HPA300 review.

2

Best with auto mode

Levoit Core 400S-P

A laser sensor that reacts when spores are disturbed, on 257 to 259 cfm of certified pollen CADR.

Pollen CADR
257 to 259 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
358 to 363 sq ft (AHAM)
Carbon
Carbon layer; Toxin Absorber option
Sensor
Laser PM2.5

Pros

  • Reacts when cleaning stirs up spores
  • 38 W
  • App reminders for filters

Cons

  • Thin carbon for strong mustiness
  • Not enough for a big basement

Spores are released when moldy material is disturbed, during cleanup for example. A laser sensor sees that spike and raises the fan. The Core 400S-P is a good choice for a bedroom or living room near a problem area that is being fixed. More in the Core 400S-P review.

3

Best for musty smell

Winix 5510

A granular carbon panel for the earthy smell mold gives off, behind 253 cfm of certified smoke CADR.

Pollen CADR
247 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
392 sq ft (AHAM)
Carbon
AOC granular carbon, about 12 months
Sensor
Odor sensor

Pros

  • More carbon than layered filters
  • Odor sensor suits musty air
  • Filters last about a year

Cons

  • PlasmaWave ionizer; switch it off if you prefer
  • Gas sensor ignores particles

The musty smell of mold comes from gases, microbial volatile organic compounds, which only carbon removes. The 5510's carbon panel handles them better than a thin wrap. See our 5510 review.

4

Best for a large basement

Levoit Core 600S-P

391 to 394 cfm of certified smoke CADR for about 610 sq ft, filter-only.

Pollen CADR
433 to 436 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
606 to 611 sq ft (AHAM)
Carbon
Carbon layer
Sensor
Laser PM2.5

Pros

  • Big certified pollen CADR
  • No electronic stage
  • Laser sensor

Cons

  • Large footprint
  • Thin carbon

For an open basement family room, the Core 600S-P's pollen CADR of 433 to 436 cfm covers a lot of space. Pair it with a dehumidifier; a basement purifier without humidity control is fighting a losing battle. Our basement guide goes further.

How we chose purifiers for mold

We ranked on AHAM pollen and dust CADR from the AHAM Verifide directory, because those tests use particles in the size range of most mold spores, then on carbon for musty odor. We excluded purifiers sold mainly on "killing" mold with UV or ions; the EPA's guidance on mold centers on moisture and cleanup, and a purifier's job is to catch what is airborne.

Mold and air purifiers: what to know

Fix the moisture first

The EPA's Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home says the key to mold control is moisture control, recommends cleaning up mold and fixing the water problem, and advises keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30 to 50%. It also notes that moldy areas over about 10 square feet may call for a professional. A purifier helps after that, not instead of it.

Spores are airborne particles

Most mold spores are a few microns across, well within what a HEPA filter catches. They become airborne when moldy material dries or is disturbed. Run the purifier continuously in the affected room, and on high during and after any cleanup. Our guides to humidity levels that prevent mold and signs your home is too humid cover the moisture side.

The smell is gas

The musty, earthy smell of a damp basement comes from gases released by mold and bacteria. HEPA does nothing for it; carbon does. A purifier with a carbon panel will make the room smell better, but a persistent smell is a sign of ongoing growth that needs finding.

What to skip

  • Ozone generators sold to "kill mold". The EPA warns against them, and ozone does not remove mold growing in walls.
  • UV or ionizer claims as a substitute for moisture control and cleanup.
  • Running a purifier in a damp room and calling it fixed. If humidity stays above 60%, mold returns.

Frequently asked questions

Do air purifiers help with mold?

They catch airborne mold spores and, with carbon, reduce musty odor. They do not stop mold growing; the EPA says the key to mold control is moisture control.

What is the best air purifier for mold spores?

The Honeywell HPA300: AHAM certified at 300 cfm pollen and 320 cfm dust CADR for 465 sq ft, with a carbon pre-filter. The Levoit Core 400S-P adds a laser sensor for smaller rooms.

Can an air purifier get rid of musty smell?

A purifier with substantial carbon reduces it, because the smell is gas. If the smell persists, mold is still growing somewhere and needs finding and fixing.

Should I use an air purifier or a dehumidifier for mold?

A dehumidifier first, to keep humidity below 60% as the EPA advises; a purifier then catches airborne spores. In a damp basement, both together work best.

Do UV air purifiers kill mold?

UV may affect spores passing through a purifier, but it does nothing for mold growing on surfaces. The EPA's mold advice centers on drying, cleanup and humidity control.
