The best smart air purifier is the Levoit Core 400S-P. Its AirSight Plus laser sensor reads PM2.5 directly, its auto mode responds within seconds of cooking smoke or dust, and its VeSync app adds schedules, filter tracking and Alexa or Google Assistant control. AHAM Verifide rates it at 231 to 234 cfm of smoke CADR for about 360 square feet.

"Smart" covers everything from a useful particle sensor to an app that only duplicates the buttons. We rank on certified CADR first, then on the sensor: a laser particle sensor reads what a purifier removes, a gas sensor reads something else, and some purifiers have no sensor at all despite an app. For a buyer's guide to which features are worth the money, see smart features worth paying for.

1

Best smart purifier

Levoit Core 400S-P

A laser PM2.5 sensor, a dependable auto mode and a full app, on certified airflow for 360 sq ft.

Smoke CADR
231 to 234 cfm (AHAM)
Sensor
Laser PM2.5
App and voice
VeSync, Alexa, Google
Room size
358 to 363 sq ft (AHAM)

Pros

  • Laser sensor reads the particles it removes
  • Works fully without the app
  • 38 W

Cons

  • Sensor does not read gases
  • VeSync account needed for app features

A laser sensor counts particles in a sample of air, the same principle used in consumer air quality monitors, so the Core 400S-P's auto mode tracks what its filter is removing. The app adds schedules, filter-life tracking and remote control. See our Core 400S-P review.

2

Best smart purifier for large rooms

Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

Particle sensor, app scheduling and geofencing on 435 cfm of certified CADR.

Smoke CADR
435 cfm (AHAM)
Sensor
Particle sensor
App and voice
Blueair app
Room size
674 sq ft (AHAM)

Pros

  • Most certified CADR among smart picks
  • Welcome Home geofencing (Blueair)
  • 46 W

Cons

  • Electrostatic stage
  • Large for small rooms

Blueair's app includes scheduling, an air quality history and, according to Blueair's listings for the Max line, Welcome Home geofencing that starts the purifier as you approach home. Its auto mode is driven by a particle sensor. Read our 211i Max review.

3

Best smart purifier for pets

Levoit Vital 200S-P

Pet Mode, app control and an infrared sensor on 250 cfm of certified CADR.

Smoke CADR
250 cfm (AHAM)
Sensor
Infrared particle sensor
App and voice
VeSync, voice assistants
Room size
388 sq ft (AHAM)

Pros

  • Pet Mode schedules extra airflow
  • Second inlet for fur
  • Two-year warranty

Cons

  • Infrared sensor is less precise than laser
  • $59.99 filters

An infrared sensor detects particles but cannot size or count them as precisely as a laser, so the auto mode reacts well to obvious events and less finely to slow changes. Pet Mode and schedules make up for it in a pet household. See our Vital 200S-P review.

4

Best smart purifier for odors

Winix 5510

An odor (gas) sensor and the Winix app on a purifier with a real carbon filter.

Smoke CADR
253 cfm (AHAM)
Sensor
Odor (gas) sensor, light sensor
App and voice
Winix Smart app, Alexa
Room size
392 sq ft (AHAM)

Pros

  • Gas sensor suits cooking and odor problems
  • Granular carbon panel
  • PlasmaWave can be switched off

Cons

  • Auto mode ignores dust and pollen
  • Winix list price is high

The 5510's manual describes its Smart Sensor as detecting odorous gas, so its auto mode follows smells rather than particles. That is the right match for a kitchen-adjacent room, and the wrong one for pollen season. Our 5510 review explains.

5

Best smart purifier that is also a fan

Dyson Purifier Cool PC1

Dyson's app and air quality reports with a cooling fan; no published CADR.

Smoke CADR

Pros

  • Doubles as a cooling fan
  • Detailed app reports
  • Sealed HEPA and carbon filter

Cons

  • No certified CADR
  • Expensive

If you want a purifier fan with a polished app, the PC1 is it, but you are paying for design and the fan, not certified clean air. See our Dyson PC1 review.

How we chose smart purifiers

We required Wi-Fi app control and an automatic mode, ranked on certified smoke CADR from the AHAM Verifide directory, and then on the sensor type each maker describes. A purifier's sensor decides how well its auto mode works, and makers describe them in very different ways.

App features that matter

  • Schedules. Run it harder while you are out and quietly at night.
  • Filter-life tracking based on run time, so you change filters on time.
  • Air quality history, which shows when your home's particle spikes happen.
  • Works offline. Check that the buttons on the purifier still control every mode if Wi-Fi drops.

Privacy and accounts

Smart purifiers need a maker account and connect to the maker's cloud. Read the privacy policy, use a strong password, and put smart home devices on a guest network if your router supports one. If you would rather not connect at all, buy a model whose buttons do everything.

A smart purifier is not a monitor

A purifier's sensor sits a foot from its own intake and is tuned to drive the fan. For an accurate reading of your room, a separate air quality monitor is more reliable, and it can tell you whether the purifier is working.

What to skip

  • Apps on purifiers with no sensor, if you wanted an auto mode.
  • Smart features in place of CADR. A great app does not make an undersized purifier clean a big room.
  • Purifiers that require the app for basic modes.

Winix's app-connected option is covered in our Winix AM90 review.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best smart air purifier?

The Levoit Core 400S-P: a laser PM2.5 sensor drives its auto mode, its VeSync app adds schedules and filter tracking, and AHAM rates it at 231 to 234 cfm smoke CADR for about 360 sq ft.

Are smart air purifiers worth it?

A good sensor and auto mode are, because the purifier works harder when needed and quieter when not. An app alone, on a purifier without a sensor, mostly duplicates the buttons.

What is the difference between a laser and an infrared sensor?

A laser sensor counts particles in a sample of air and estimates PM2.5; an infrared sensor detects particles less precisely. Laser sensors make for more accurate auto modes.

Do smart air purifiers work without Wi-Fi?

The picks here keep their auto and manual modes on the purifier's own buttons. Schedules, history and remote control need the app.

Can a smart air purifier replace an air quality monitor?

Not reliably. Its sensor sits beside its own intake and is tuned to drive the fan. A separate monitor gives a better reading of the room.
