The best air purifier for a large room is the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max: AHAM Verifide rates it at 435 cfm of smoke CADR for a 674 square foot room, and it does that on 46 watts. If you want a big purifier with no electrostatic stage, the Levoit Core 600S-P is certified at 391 to 394 cfm for about 610 sq ft.
A large room changes the maths. Doubling the floor area doubles the CADR you need, and taller ceilings add more. Every certified pick below delivers at least 323 cfm of smoke CADR; we explain when two smaller purifiers beat one big one, and how ceiling height changes the answer.

How we chose
Every certified pick is in the AHAM Verifide directory with a smoke CADR above 300 cfm, which is what a 450 sq ft room needs for about five air changes an hour. We compared annual energy and integrated energy factor from the same directory, checked each model on California's certified list for whether it uses an electronic stage, and read the makers' filter pages.
The Coway Airmega 400 is a capable large-room machine with a five-year warranty, but Coway was not in AHAM's directory when we checked, so its 328 cfm smoke CADR is Coway's own figure.
Large room buying guide
Ceiling height matters
CADR cleans volume, not floor area. A 500 sq ft room with 8 ft ceilings holds 4,000 cubic feet of air; with 12 ft ceilings it holds 6,000, and needs 50% more CADR for the same air changes.
| Floor area | 8 ft ceiling | 10 ft ceiling | 12 ft ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 sq ft | 267 cfm | 333 cfm | 400 cfm |
| 500 sq ft | 333 cfm | 417 cfm | 500 cfm |
| 600 sq ft | 400 cfm | 500 cfm | 600 cfm |
| 800 sq ft | 533 cfm | 667 cfm | 800 cfm |
Our sizing calculator takes ceiling height into account.
One big purifier or two smaller ones?
CADRs add up: two purifiers rated at 234 cfm deliver about 468 cfm between them. In an L-shaped or divided space, two mid-size units placed at opposite ends often clean better than one large unit in a corner, because air does not mix evenly across a big room. Two units also let you move one into a bedroom at night. One large unit is quieter for the same total airflow and means one set of filters.
Placement in an open plan room
Put a single large purifier where people spend time and where its outlet is not blocked, not tucked behind a sofa. Keep it out of the kitchen's direct path if you cook often, or it will spend its filter life on cooking smoke. See our placement guide.
Running cost scales with size
Large purifiers draw more power and take bigger filters. AHAM's annual energy figures for our picks range from 256 kWh (Blueair 211i Max) to 404 kWh (Levoit EverestAir-P), roughly $44 to $70 a year at 17.2 cents per kWh, EIA's 2025 US residential average.
Large-room picks compared on certified numbers
| Model | Smoke CADR | Room size | Annual energy | Cost a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blueair Blue Signature SP4i | 455 cfm | 705 sq ft | 261 kWh | about $45 |
| Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max | 435 cfm | 674 sq ft | 256 kWh | about $44 |
| Levoit Core 600S-P | 391 to 394 cfm | 606 to 611 sq ft | 378 to 389 kWh | about $65 to $67 |
| Levoit EverestAir-P | 354 cfm | 549 sq ft | 404 kWh | about $69 |
| Honeywell HPA5300B | 323 cfm | 500 sq ft | Not listed | Not listed |
The two Blueairs lead on both airflow and efficiency. The Levoits cost more to run but have no electrostatic stage, which matters to some buyers more than $20 a year.
What to skip
- "Up to 3,000 sq ft" claims. They assume one air change an hour. Check AHAM's room size.
- A small purifier on high in a big room. It is loud and still too slow.
- Whole-home claims from a single portable. One unit cleans the room it is in. For the whole house, see the whole-home options.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best air purifier for a large room?
The Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max: AHAM rates it at 435 cfm smoke CADR for 674 sq ft on 46 W. For a mechanical machine with no electrostatic stage, the Levoit Core 600S-P is rated at 391 to 394 cfm for about 610 sq ft.
What CADR do I need for a 500 square foot room?
About 333 cfm of smoke CADR for five air changes an hour with 8 ft ceilings, and about 417 cfm with 10 ft ceilings.
Can one air purifier clean a whole open plan floor?
Only if its CADR matches the floor's volume. A 435 cfm unit gives about five air changes an hour in 650 sq ft with 8 ft ceilings. Beyond that, or in an L-shaped layout, two purifiers clean better.
Is it better to have two air purifiers or one big one?
Two can cover a divided or very large space more evenly, and their CADRs add up. One large unit is quieter for the same airflow and simpler to maintain.
Do high ceilings affect air purifier size?
Yes. CADR cleans volume, so a 12 ft ceiling needs 50% more CADR than an 8 ft ceiling for the same floor area and air changes.
How much does it cost to run a large air purifier?
AHAM's annual energy figures for our large-room picks range from 256 to 404 kWh, about $44 to $70 a year at the 2025 US average residential price of 17.2 cents per kWh.
