For whole-home air cleaning, most houses do best with a combination: a MERV 13 furnace filter, if the HVAC system can take it, to clean all the air slowly whenever the fan runs, plus a large certified portable such as the Blueair Blue Signature SP4i (455 cfm smoke CADR, 705 sq ft in AHAM's directory) in the main living space and a smaller one in each bedroom.

No portable purifier cleans a whole house: air does not move freely enough between rooms, and a 2,000 square foot home with 8 ft ceilings holds 16,000 cubic feet of air. A purifier sold as "whole home" is quoting the one air change an hour figure at best. This page explains the options, what each delivers in real air changes, and which big portables give the most certified airflow when you want room-by-room coverage.

Three ways to clean a whole house

How much does the HVAC system clean?

A furnace or air handler typically moves several hundred to over a thousand cubic feet of air a minute when its fan runs, but only a fraction of the particles in that air are caught, depending on the filter's MERV rating. The EPA's guide to air cleaners and HVAC filters notes that higher-efficiency filters (MERV 13 and up) remove more fine particles, that the fan has to run for the filter to work, and that you should check whether your system can handle the added resistance. Running the HVAC fan continuously, or on a circulate setting, increases how much air is filtered.

Our guides on upgrading to MERV 13, whole-house air filters and HEPA bypass systems go deeper.

Room-by-room with portables

Portables deliver certified airflow where you need it most. A typical plan for a 2,000 sq ft home:

Example plan, 8 ft ceilings, about 5 air changes an hour per room. Our arithmetic.

The bedrooms matter most, because that is where people spend eight hours with the door closed.

How we chose

We chose the largest portables by certified smoke CADR in the AHAM Verifide directory, checked their ozone status on California's certified list, and included one well-built machine outside AHAM's program. We did not rank in-duct systems here because their performance depends on your ductwork and installation.

What to skip

  • "Whole house" coverage claims on a single portable. They are the one air change an hour figure, spread across walls air does not pass through.
  • Ozone generators and in-duct ionizers sold for whole-house use without independent data. The EPA advises against ozone generators.
  • The thickest, highest-MERV filter your slot will take without checking that the system can handle it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an air purifier that cleans a whole house?

Not a single portable. Air does not move freely between rooms, and a 2,000 sq ft house holds about 16,000 cubic feet of air. Whole-home cleaning means HVAC filtration, a purifier in each main room, or both.

Is a whole-house air purifier better than portable ones?

HVAC filtration covers every room the ducts reach but only while the fan runs. Portables deliver certified airflow fast in the rooms you use. Many homes use both.

Does a MERV 13 furnace filter work as a whole-home air purifier?

It removes more fine particles than lower-MERV filters, according to the EPA, when the HVAC fan is running. Check that your system can handle its resistance.

How many air purifiers do I need for my house?

One for the main living space and one for each bedroom is a good plan. Size each for about five air changes an hour.

What is the most powerful air purifier for a large home?

Among AHAM-certified models we found, the Blueair Blue Signature SP4i at 455 cfm smoke CADR for 705 sq ft. It still cleans one large open area, not a whole house.
