The best air purifier for a dorm room is the Levoit Core 300-P. AHAM Verifide rates it at 143 cfm of smoke CADR for a 222 square foot room, which covers a typical double, it has no ionizer or UV lamp to worry a residence hall, and its replacement filter is $29.99. If you share a smaller single, the Levoit Core 200S-P (90 cfm, 140 sq ft) costs less and fits on a desk-side shelf.

Dorms add constraints a bedroom does not. Many colleges publish lists of banned appliances, some name air purifiers with ozone or ionizer features, and roommates share the noise. We picked filter-only models where we could, kept them small enough to move in a car with everything else, and sized them to standard dorm rooms. Check your college's residence-life rules before you buy.

1

Best for a double room

Levoit Core 300-P

Certified for 222 sq ft, filter-only, quiet on Sleep Mode, and cheap to keep running for four years.

Smoke CADR
143 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
222 sq ft (AHAM)
Ionizer or UV
No
Filter
$29.99, every 6 to 8 months (Levoit)

Pros

  • Fan and filter only
  • 24 dB Sleep Mode (Levoit listing)
  • Display-off button for a roommate's sleep

Cons

  • No sensor; you set the speed
  • AHAM annual energy 317 kWh, higher than newer models

A standard double is roughly 12 by 16 ft, about 190 sq ft. The Core 300-P gives that room about 5.6 air changes an hour on high, so it can run on speed 2 most of the day. Two filters a year at $29.99 is a manageable student budget. Read the Core 300-P review for its filter options, including a pet allergy version for anyone allergic to a roommate's cat back home.

2

Best for a single room

Levoit Core 200S-P

A smaller, cheaper smart cylinder certified for 140 sq ft, enough for most singles.

Smoke CADR
90 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
140 sq ft (AHAM)
Ionizer or UV
No
Filter
Core 200S-P filters (Levoit)

Pros

  • Low purchase price
  • App and voice control on a phone you already carry
  • Small enough for a shelf

Cons

  • Low efficiency: integrated energy factor 2.2 to 2.3
  • Not enough for a double

For a 10 by 13 ft single, about 130 sq ft, the Core 200S-P gives about 5.2 air changes an hour. Its efficiency is poor compared with newer models, which costs money over time, but in a dorm the electricity is usually included and the purchase price matters most.

3

Best quiet pick for light sleepers

Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max

153 cfm certified for 237 sq ft with a very quiet low setting and high efficiency.

Smoke CADR
153 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
237 sq ft (AHAM)
Ionizer or UV
Electrostatic stage (CARB electronic)
Filter
Blue Pure 511 series filters (Blueair)

Pros

  • Most certified airflow here
  • Integrated energy factor 7.9
  • App and auto mode

Cons

  • Electrostatic charging stage; check your college's rules
  • Costs more than the Levoits

If one roommate is a light sleeper, the 511i Max's quiet low setting is worth the extra cost. It uses Blueair's HEPASilent, which charges particles before the filter, so California certifies it as an electronic air cleaner under the 0.050 ppm ozone limit. Some residence halls ban ionizers by name; this is not an ionizer in the marketing sense, but read the rule carefully or choose a Levoit.

4

Best slim tower for a tight corner

GermGuardian AC4825E

A narrow 22 inch tower certified for 153 sq ft that fits between a desk and a dresser.

Smoke CADR
99 cfm (AHAM)
Room size
153 sq ft (AHAM)
Ionizer or UV
UV-C lamp, can be switched off
Filter
Filter B, every 6 to 8 months

Pros

  • Slim footprint
  • Cheap genuine filters
  • 3-year warranty

Cons

  • UV-C lamp may fall under some colleges' bans
  • Low efficiency

When floor space is the constraint, a slim tower beats a cylinder. Run the AC4825 with its UV-C lamp off; the lamp does not add to the CADR and some residence halls restrict UV devices. See our AC4825 review.

How we chose dorm purifiers

We started from AHAM-certified models in the AHAM Verifide directory sized for 130 to 240 sq ft, preferred filter-only designs, and checked which use an electronic stage on California's certified list. We weighed purchase price more heavily than in our other guides, because dorm electricity is usually included in housing fees.

Dorm room buying guide

Check the college's appliance rules first

Residence-life offices publish lists of prohibited items, and they vary. Some ban only space heaters and hot plates; others name air purifiers that produce ozone, ionizers or UV lamps. A filter-only purifier with no electronic stage is the least likely to fall foul of any list. If in doubt, email residence life with the model number before move-in.

Size for the room you actually have

Smoke CADR for about 5 air changes an hour, 8 ft ceilings. Our arithmetic; room sizes are typical, not any one college's.

Shared rooms and noise

Agree on a nighttime setting with your roommate. A purifier that clears the room on a low speed is easier to live with than one that needs high. Turn the display off; most of our picks have a button for it.

What a purifier will not fix in a dorm

Older residence halls can have humidity and ventilation problems a purifier cannot solve. If the room smells musty or you see mold, report it to facilities; a purifier removes airborne spores but does nothing about damp walls. A small hygrometer tells you if the room is above 60% relative humidity, the level the EPA advises staying below (ideally 30 to 50%); see our guide to ideal indoor humidity.

Moving it every year

A dorm purifier moves at least twice a year. Light cylinders such as the Levoits (about 8 lb for the Core 300-P) travel easily; keep the box, and carry a spare filter in it.

What to skip

  • Ozone generators and ionizer-only gadgets. They are the likeliest to be banned, and the EPA warns against ozone generators outright.
  • USB mini purifiers with no CADR. They cannot clean a room.
  • Large towers. A 500 sq ft machine in a 150 sq ft room is money and floor space wasted.

For a bigger shared apartment, see our overall picks; for allergies, the allergy guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are air purifiers allowed in dorms?

At most colleges, yes, but rules vary. Some residence halls ban purifiers that produce ozone or use ionizers or UV lamps. A filter-only model such as the Levoit Core 300-P is the least likely to be restricted; check your college's prohibited-items list.

What size air purifier do I need for a dorm room?

For a typical 12 by 16 ft double with 8 ft ceilings, about 128 cfm of smoke CADR gives five air changes an hour. A small single needs about 80 to 100 cfm.

What is the best cheap air purifier for a dorm?

The Levoit Core 200S-P is AHAM certified at 90 cfm for 140 sq ft and is inexpensive. For a double room, the Levoit Core 300-P is certified at 143 cfm for 222 sq ft.

Do dorm air purifiers help with allergies?

They reduce airborne particles such as dust, pollen and pet dander that roommates bring in on clothes. Run it continuously on a low speed and keep the door closed for the best effect.

Will an air purifier bother my roommate?

On low, the picks here are quiet; Levoit quotes 24 dB in Sleep Mode for the Core 300-P. Agree on a nighttime setting and switch the display light off.
