The Levoit Core 300-P is a good first air purifier for a bedroom or small home office of up to about 220 square feet, and a poor choice for a living room. Its AHAM Verifide smoke CADR is 143 cubic feet per minute, which works out to almost five air changes an hour in a 12 by 18 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling. The 1,073 sq ft on the box is real arithmetic, but it assumes the air is cleaned once an hour, which is too slow for allergies or smoke.
Its strengths are the price, the small footprint and a $29.99 replacement filter. Its weaknesses are a top speed that is loud for a small machine and no air quality sensor or auto mode. If you want those, or a room over 250 sq ft, look at the Core 400S-P instead.
What the Levoit Core 300-P is
The Core 300-P is Levoit's compact cylinder: air comes in through the sides, passes through a wrap-around filter, and leaves through the top. The "-P" suffix marks the current version, which takes the Core 300-P filter family; the older Core 300 and the Wi-Fi Core 300S look the same but take their own filters, so check the model on the base before ordering replacements.
There is no sensor, app or auto mode. You get three fan speeds, Sleep Mode, a display-off button, a 2, 4, 6 or 8 hour timer and a filter reminder light. Levoit rates it at 56 watts.
Levoit Core 300 AHAM figures and what they mean for your room
The AHAM Verifide directory lists the Core 300 at 143 cfm for smoke, 153 for dust and 167 for pollen, with a suggested room size of 222 sq ft. Smoke is the figure that matters most, because smoke particles are the small, hard-to-catch ones. AHAM's room size is set so the purifier delivers about 4.8 air changes an hour in a room with 8 ft ceilings.
Levoit's "up to 1,073 sq ft" uses the same CADR but assumes one air change an hour. Both numbers are honest; only the first one describes a room where you will notice the difference.
| Room | Floor area | Air changes an hour | Good fit? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small bedroom, 10 x 11 ft | 110 sq ft | 9.8 | Yes, with room to run it on low |
| Bedroom, 12 x 14 ft | 168 sq ft | 6.4 | Yes |
| AHAM room size | 222 sq ft | 4.8 | Yes, on high |
| Living room, 15 x 20 ft | 300 sq ft | 3.6 | Only for light dust |
| Open plan, 20 x 25 ft | 500 sq ft | 2.1 | No |
Our air purifier sizing calculator runs the same arithmetic for any room, and CADR explained covers why smoke CADR is the one to compare.
The filter and what it costs a year
The stock filter is a three-layer cylinder: a fine-mesh pre-filter, a HEPA-type main layer and a thin activated carbon wrap. Levoit's wording is careful. Its Amazon listing says the main filter is "HEPA-grade while operating in Sleep Mode" under the IEST RP-CC001.7 test, meaning the efficiency claim is tied to the low airflow of Sleep Mode rather than every speed. That is normal for this class of purifier and it is why the AHAM CADR, measured on the whole machine, is the better guide to real performance.
Levoit sells four filters for the Core 300-P on its own store:
- Original Filter: $29.99, the default.
- Pet Allergy Filter: $35.99, with a denser carbon layer for pet odor.
- Toxin Absorber Filter: $35.99, aimed at smoke, smog and VOCs.
- 4-Stage Smoke Remover: $39.99, with extra pre-filters.
Levoit says to replace the filter every 6 to 8 months. At $29.99 that is $45 to $60 a year for the Original Filter, one of the lowest running costs of any purifier with an AHAM listing. The carbon layer is thin, though, so do not expect it to handle cooking smells or heavy smoke for long; the smoke guide covers machines with real carbon beds.
Noise and power
Levoit quotes 24 dB in Sleep Mode on its Amazon listing, which is near silent. It does not publish a figure for high, and high is where the Core 300-P has to run to reach its CADR. Expect a clear whoosh on speed 3; most owners run it on speed 1 or 2 overnight, which is why the size of the room matters so much. In a 12 by 12 ft bedroom it has enough headroom to clean the air on a lower speed.
At 56 W on top speed, running it flat out for 8 hours a night costs about 0.45 kWh a night, roughly 164 kWh a year. AHAM lists its annual energy use at 317 kWh, based on AHAM's own duty cycle.
Levoit Core 300 vs the alternatives
| Model | Smoke CADR | AHAM room size | Sensor and auto mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Levoit Core 300 | 143 cfm | 222 sq ft | No |
| Levoit Core 300S (Wi-Fi) | 141 cfm | 219 sq ft | App only |
| Levoit Vital 100S-P | 143 cfm | 222 sq ft | Yes |
| Blueair Blue Pure 411 Max | 145 cfm | 225 sq ft | Yes |
| Levoit Core 400S-P | 234 cfm | 363 sq ft | Yes |
For the same room size, the alternatives mostly add a sensor and auto mode. For a bigger room, the Core 400S-P is the step up within Levoit, and the Winix 5510 adds a larger carbon filter for odors.
Who should buy the Levoit Core 300-P
- Buy it for a bedroom, nursery, dorm or office up to about 220 sq ft, if you are happy to set the speed yourself.
- Buy it if low running cost matters: $29.99 filters and 56 W on high.
- Skip it for a living room or open plan space; the arithmetic above does not work.
- Skip it if you want it to react to cooking or smoke on its own; it has no sensor.
- Skip it for heavy odors or VOCs; the carbon layer is a thin wrap.

Frequently asked questions
How big a room does the Levoit Core 300 cover?
AHAM Verifide lists it for 222 sq ft, which is where its 143 cfm smoke CADR gives about 4.8 air changes an hour. Levoit's 1,073 sq ft figure assumes just one air change an hour, which is too slow for allergies or smoke.
How often do you change the Levoit Core 300-P filter?
Levoit says every 6 to 8 months, and the filter light reminds you. The Original Filter is $29.99 on Levoit's store, so a year of filters costs about $45 to $60.
Is the Levoit Core 300 a true HEPA purifier?
Levoit describes the main filter as HEPA-grade in Sleep Mode under the IEST RP-CC001.7 test, which ties the efficiency claim to low airflow. The whole-machine AHAM CADR of 143 cfm for smoke is the better measure of how well it cleans a room.
What is the difference between the Core 300, Core 300-P and Core 300S?
They share the same cylinder design. The Core 300-P is the current version and takes the Core 300-P filters; the Core 300S adds Wi-Fi and app control and lists 141 cfm smoke CADR in AHAM's directory. Filters are not interchangeable across every version, so check the model on the base.
Does the Levoit Core 300 produce ozone?
It has no ionizer or UV lamp; it is a fan and filter. Its Amazon listing states it is CARB compliant, which is California's certification for air cleaners.
Is the Levoit Core 300 loud?
Levoit quotes 24 dB in Sleep Mode, which is very quiet. It does not publish a figure for top speed, which is noticeably louder, so sizing it for a small room lets you run it on a lower speed.
