The GermGuardian AC4825E is a low-cost tower purifier that belongs in a small bedroom, guest room or office of up to about 150 square feet. AHAM Verifide rates it at 99 cfm of smoke CADR for a 153 sq ft room, and its HEPA Filter B is one of the cheaper genuine replacement filters around.
Its limits are airflow and efficiency. For a little more money, a Levoit Core 300-P moves about 45% more certified air (143 cfm) and is rated for a 222 sq ft room. The UV-C bulb GermGuardian advertises adds a part to replace, and it plays no part in the AHAM CADR.
GermGuardian AC4825 AHAM figures
The AHAM Verifide directory lists the AC4825W and AC4825E at 99 cfm for smoke, 116 for dust and 129 for pollen, with a PM2.5 CADR of 111 and a suggested room size of 153 sq ft. GermGuardian's product page gives 99 smoke and 118 dust, and describes the room size as 153 sq ft cleaned every 12.5 minutes, or 743 sq ft once an hour.
| Room | Floor area | Air changes an hour |
|---|---|---|
| Small office, 9 x 10 ft | 90 sq ft | 8.3 |
| Guest room, 10 x 12 ft | 120 sq ft | 6.2 |
| AHAM room size | 153 sq ft | 4.9 |
| Bedroom, 12 x 16 ft | 192 sq ft | 3.9 |
| Living room, 15 x 20 ft | 300 sq ft | 2.5 |
AHAM puts its annual energy use at 182 kWh with an integrated energy factor of 3.5, which is low efficiency: the Levoit Core 400S-P scores 5.8 and the Blueair 211i Max 9.0. In money, 182 kWh a year at 17.2 cents per kWh, the 2025 US residential average from the EIA, is about $31.
Filters and the UV-C bulb
GermGuardian lists three replaceable parts on its product page:
- HEPA Filter B (FLT4825, with SMOKE CLEAR, TOXIN CLEAR and pet variants), which GermGuardian says to replace every 6 to 8 months depending on use.
- Carbon pre-filters (FLT22CB4, four to a pack), replaced every 2 to 3 months.
- UV-C bulb (LB4000).
The UV-C bulb shines on air passing through the unit and is meant to work on germs. The EPA's guidance on air cleaners notes that UV in portable purifiers may not hold air long enough to have a meaningful effect on airborne microorganisms; what the AHAM CADR measures is particle removal by the fan and filter. You can run the AC4825 with the UV-C switched off and lose nothing in CADR, and doing so saves replacing the bulb. We did not find the AC4825 by name in the parts of California's certified air cleaner list we read, so check the label on the unit if certification matters to you.
What a year of upkeep looks like
At GermGuardian's intervals, a year means about two Filter B HEPA filters and one or two packs of carbon pre-filters, plus a UV-C bulb if you use it. Genuine Filter B is one of the least expensive HEPA filters for any AHAM-listed purifier, which is the AC4825's main selling point beside its purchase price.
GermGuardian AC4825 vs the alternatives

Who should buy the GermGuardian AC4825E
- Buy it for a room of 150 sq ft or less when price is the deciding factor.
- Buy it if you like a slim tower that fits beside a bed or desk.
- Skip it for a standard main bedroom; the Levoit Core 300-P or Blueair 411i Max have about 45% more certified airflow.
- Skip it if you were buying it for the UV-C; that feature is not what cleans the air in AHAM's test.

Frequently asked questions
What size room is the GermGuardian AC4825 good for?
AHAM Verifide lists it for 153 sq ft, with a smoke CADR of 99 cfm. GermGuardian's figure of 743 sq ft is for one air change an hour.
How often do you change the GermGuardian AC4825 filter?
GermGuardian says to replace HEPA Filter B (FLT4825) every 6 to 8 months and the FLT22CB4 carbon pre-filters every 2 to 3 months, depending on use.
Should I use the UV-C light on the GermGuardian AC4825?
It is optional. The EPA notes that UV in portable purifiers may not expose air long enough to have a meaningful effect, and the AHAM CADR comes from the fan and HEPA filter. Running without it saves buying replacement bulbs.
What is the difference between the AC4825, AC4825E and AC4825W?
They are color and retailer versions of the same purifier; AHAM lists the AC4825W and AC4825E under one rating.
Is the GermGuardian AC4825 better than the Levoit Core 300?
No on airflow: the Core 300 is AHAM rated at 143 cfm smoke CADR for 222 sq ft against the AC4825's 99 cfm for 153 sq ft. The AC4825 is a slimmer tower with cheaper filters.
How loud is the GermGuardian AC4825?
GermGuardian describes the lowest speed as quiet enough to use as white noise but does not publish decibel figures on the pages we read.
