The HealthMate Plus is the chemical-focused version of Austin Air's HealthMate: the same heavy steel body, with an impregnated carbon blend aimed at formaldehyde, VOCs, wildfire smoke odor and traffic fumes.
The HealthMate is built around one idea: a huge carbon bed that soaks up odors and chemicals for years. It is heavy, plain and expensive up front, and cheap to run after that.
Garage air means sawdust, sanding dust, solvent smells and sometimes exhaust. A purifier handles the first well, the second with enough carbon, and the third not at all.
HEPA filters do nothing for smell. Pet odor is gas, and only carbon removes it, so the purifiers here are ranked on the carbon they carry, not the airflow on the box.
VOCs are gases from paint, furniture, cleaning products and cooking. HEPA filters let them through. These purifiers carry enough carbon or specialty sorbent to make a difference.
IQAir's HealthPro Plus is the purifier hospitals and the cautious buy: heavy, well sealed, with a gas filter and a HEPA stage that lasts four years. IQAir also refuses to publish a CADR, which makes it hard to compare.
New paint, flooring, cabinets and furniture all release VOCs. A monitor shows the trend and whether ventilation is working; EPA's steps (ventilation, moderate heat and humidity, certified wood products) do the work.
