Best Humidifiers for Bedrooms of 2026: Quiet, Dark and All-Night Picks
The quietest bedroom humidifiers by the makers' own dB ratings, with lights that switch off and a tank that lasts the night, for 200 to 600 sq ft rooms.

For most bedrooms, the humidifier to buy is the Levoit Superior Studio Smart. Levoit rates it at 19 dB on its lowest fan speed, the lowest figure among the current models we compared. It is evaporative, so it leaves no white mineral dust on the nightstand. Its Sleep Mode turns the fan to low and the display off, and Levoit says the 4.5-liter tank runs up to 40 hours on low in rooms up to 600 sq ft.
For a small bedroom, the Levoit Classic 160 shows no light at all unless the tank runs dry and lasts up to 25 hours per fill. Picks are judged on the makers' own figures: noise and the setting it applies to, whether the lights go dark, hours per tank at the overnight setting, rated room size and cleaning. For a child's room, see the best humidifiers for babies.

Best overall
Levoit Superior Studio Smart Evaporative Humidifier
For most bedrooms up to 600 sq ft: the lowest noise rating we found, a display that goes dark in Sleep Mode and no white dust.
- Type
- Evaporative (no mist)
- Quietest rated level
- 19 dB on the lowest fan (45 dB at full), measured 1.5 m away (Levoit)
- Tank and longest run
- 4.5 L, up to 40 hours on low fan (Levoit)
- Rated coverage
- Up to 600 sq ft (Levoit)
- Lights at night
- Display off in Sleep Mode, or hold Sleep for 3 seconds
- Warranty
- 2 years
Pros
- 19 dB on the lowest fan speed by Levoit's spec, measured at 1.5 m
- Sleep Mode sets the fan to low, turns the display off and targets 50% humidity
- Washable wick that Levoit says can last up to 2 years with care
- Wick frame, support frame and tank can go in the dishwasher
Cons
- 45 dB at full fan: the quiet figure applies only on low
- After it shuts off or runs dry, an automatic Dry Mode runs the fan to dry the wick (140 minutes on its low setting) unless you switch it off in the app
- The wick needs a wash every 2 weeks and the tank a clean every 3 days
This is an evaporative humidifier: a fan pulls room air through a wet wick that sits on top of the tank, so there is no visible mist. EPA says evaporative units are not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals, which is why this one suits tap water better than any ultrasonic pick here. Levoit lists a 12 W rating and a maximum output of 400 mL an hour.
The bedroom numbers come from Levoit's spec sheet: 19 dB on the lowest fan and 45 dB at full power, both measured 1.5 m from the unit, and up to 40 hours from 4.5 liters on low. That works out to about 110 mL an hour, or roughly 0.9 L over an 8-hour night (our arithmetic). Sleep Mode drops the fan to low, turns off the display and aims for 50% humidity by default, adjustable from 30 to 80% in the VeSync app. You can also turn the display lights off by holding the Sleep button for 3 seconds, according to the user manual.
Two things to know before buying. The low fan is also the lowest output, so a large, very dry room may not reach 40% overnight; check with a hygrometer. And when the unit switches off or runs dry, its automatic Dry Mode keeps the fan going to dry the wick (140 minutes on the low setting, per the manual), which you can turn off in the app. The manual asks for at least 12 inches from walls and no essential oils in the water. Skip it for a room under about 200 sq ft, where the Classic 160 does the job in a fraction of the space.
Best for small bedrooms
Levoit Classic 160 Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier
A nightstand-size cool mist unit for bedrooms up to about 220 sq ft, with no light showing while it runs.
- Type
- Ultrasonic cool mist
- Quietest rated level
- Under 28 dB, even at max mist (Levoit)
- Tank and longest run
- 2.5 L, up to 25 hours on min mist; 11 hours on max (Levoit)
- Rated coverage
- 219 sq ft (Levoit manual)
- Lights at night
- None; a red refill light comes on only when the tank is empty
- Warranty
- 2 years
Pros
- Levoit rates it under 28 dB even at its highest mist setting
- No display or night light; the only light is the red empty-tank indicator
- Tank, cover, filter, mist tube and float can go in the dishwasher below 158°F (Levoit manual)
- About 6.4 by 7.1 inches and 10.1 inches tall: it fits a nightstand
Cons
- Rated for 219 sq ft, too small for most primary bedrooms
- Ultrasonic: Levoit recommends purified or distilled water, and EPA says this type can disperse minerals
- One mist knob and no humidity setting in Levoit's specs, so check the room with a hygrometer
The Classic 160 is a simple ultrasonic humidifier with a single knob. Levoit's product page lists mist output from 100 mL an hour at the minimum to 190 mL at the maximum, a 2.5-liter tank, and noise under 28 dB at maximum mist. The manual rates it for 219 sq ft, which fits a bedroom of about 12 by 18 feet or smaller.
For sleep, the light situation is the selling point. There is no display or night light; the manual says the red refill indicator turns on only when the tank is empty and off again once it is filled. On the minimum setting, 2.5 liters lasting 25 hours works out to 100 mL an hour, or about 0.8 L over 8 hours, so one fill covers two or three nights (our arithmetic from Levoit's figures).
Levoit recommends purified or distilled water, and EPA notes that ultrasonic units can put tap-water minerals into the air as white dust. Keep it at least 12 inches from walls, per the manual. Skip it for a room over about 220 sq ft; the Dreo HM311 covers 300 and the Superior Studio 600.
Best budget for medium bedrooms
Dreo HM311 4L Ultrasonic Humidifier
A low-cost 4-liter cool mist unit for bedrooms up to 300 sq ft, with a night light you can switch off.
- Type
- Ultrasonic cool mist
- Quietest rated level
- 28 dB (Dreo; setting not stated)
- Tank and longest run
- 4 L, up to 32 hours (Dreo)
- Rated coverage
- Up to 300 sq ft (Dreo)
- Lights at night
- Ambient light steps from high to low to off (Dreo manual)
Pros
- 4-liter tank: Dreo says up to 32 hours per fill
- Rated for rooms up to 300 sq ft, a typical secondary bedroom
- The ambient light switches off, per the manual
- Top fill, three mist levels and a nozzle that tilts 30 degrees (Dreo)
Cons
- Dreo gives 28 dB without saying at which mist level
- Ultrasonic: Dreo recommends purified water to slow mold growth, and tap water leaves white dust
- The manual says not to rinse the main body under running water, and to descale monthly
Dreo's page lists the HM311 at 26 W, 28 dB, a 4-liter tank and an effective range of 300 sq ft, with up to 32 hours of moisture per fill. At that rate, 4 liters over 32 hours is 125 mL an hour, about 1 L over an 8-hour night (our arithmetic). Dreo does not say which mist level its 28 dB figure applies to, so treat it as a rough match for the Classic 160 rather than a ranking.
The user manual describes the ambient light button as stepping from high brightness to low brightness to off, so the room can go dark. It also asks for at least 12 inches from walls or large obstacles. Dreo's own FAQ recommends purified water to slow mold, and like any ultrasonic unit it will leave white dust on nearby surfaces with hard tap water.
Buy it if your bedroom is 200 to 300 sq ft and you want a full night per fill at low cost. Skip it if you will only use tap water; an evaporative pick avoids the dust.
Longest run per fill
Dreo HM524 6L Ultrasonic Humidifier
For large bedrooms and people who would rather refill every few days: 6 liters and up to 60 hours per fill.
- Type
- Ultrasonic cool mist
- Quietest rated level
- 28 dB (Dreo; setting not stated)
- Tank and longest run
- 6 L, up to 60 hours (Dreo; in sleep mode, per the Amazon listing)
- Rated coverage
- Up to 500 sq ft (Dreo)
- Lights at night
- Ambient light can be turned off (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Up to 60 hours from one 6-liter fill, per Dreo
- Rated for rooms up to 500 sq ft
- Humidity sensor with an auto mode and a 0 to 12 hour timer (per the Amazon listing)
Cons
- Dreo's 28 dB comes without a setting
- The light-off option is stated on the Amazon listing, not on Dreo's page
- White dust with hard tap water, as with any ultrasonic unit
The HM524 is the HM311's larger sibling. Dreo's page lists a 6-liter tank, up to 60 hours of run time, 28 dB, 26 W and a floor area of 500 sq ft. The Amazon listing says the 60 hours is in sleep mode; 6 liters over 60 hours is 100 mL an hour, about 0.8 L a night, so one fill can last a week of nights. At the 300 mL an hour maximum given on the Amazon listing, the same tank lasts about 20 hours (our arithmetic).
The listing says the ambient light can be turned off and that a humidity sensor drives an auto mode. Those features come from the listing rather than Dreo's own page, so check the light behavior when it arrives. Buy it if refilling every night is the problem. Skip it for a small room, where the Classic 160 takes far less space.
Best evaporative for larger bedrooms
Vornado EVDC300 Energy Smart Evaporative Humidifier
An evaporative unit with a humidistat for primary bedrooms up to 560 sq ft, whose display dims itself when the room goes dark.
- Type
- Evaporative (no mist)
- Quietest rated level
- Not stated; Low is Vornado's "quiet, nighttime" setting
- Tank and longest run
- 1 gal tank; up to 2.3 gal of output in 24 hours (Vornado)
- Rated coverage
- Up to 560 sq ft (Vornado)
- Lights at night
- A light sensor dims the display and lights to the room
- Guarantee
- 5-year satisfaction guarantee
Pros
- Evaporative, so no white dust from tap water
- A photodetector dims the display and lights in a dark room; the display also dims after 20 seconds idle
- Humidistat with automatic control; Energy Smart mode uses as little as 1 watt (Vornado)
- 5-year satisfaction guarantee
Cons
- Vornado publishes no decibel figure
- At the full 2.3 gallons a day, a 1-gallon tank lasts about 10 hours (our arithmetic); run it on Low overnight
- Wicks last about 4 to 8 weeks, per Vornado's manual
Vornado rates the EVDC300 for rooms up to 560 sq ft, with a 1-gallon tank, up to 2.3 gallons of moisture in 24 hours and an Energy Smart mode that uses as little as 1 watt. Its owner's guide calls the Low setting the one for "quiet, nighttime use or smaller rooms", and says a photodetector adjusts the brightness of the display and lights to the light in the room. The display also dims after 20 seconds without a touch.
The tank is the trade-off. At the full rate, 2.3 gallons a day is about 0.1 gallon an hour, so the 1-gallon tank lasts roughly 10 hours (our arithmetic); on Low or under humidistat control it runs longer, but Vornado does not say how long. Wicks last about 4 to 8 weeks depending on use and water hardness, and Vornado says to replace one when it turns hard and stops absorbing water.
Buy it for a primary bedroom where you want evaporative humidity and a display that dims itself. Skip it if a published decibel figure matters; the Superior Studio has one.
How we chose
A bedroom humidifier runs for 8 hours a few feet from a sleeping person, so the criteria differ from a living room unit:
- Noise at the overnight setting. We list each maker's figure and the setting it applies to. Makers do not measure noise the same way (Levoit states 1.5 m; Dreo states no distance), so treat a gap of 1 or 2 dB as a tie.
- Lights. Whether the display and any night light can go fully dark, from the manual where we could read it.
- One tank, one night. Hours per fill at the low setting, and how much water an 8-hour night uses.
- Rated room size against typical bedrooms of 150 to 600 sq ft.
- White dust and cleaning: evaporative or ultrasonic, and which parts go in the dishwasher.
Every figure is the maker's own, from its product page or manual, or labeled as from the Amazon listing. For living rooms and whole-floor units, see the best humidifiers.

Buying guide for a bedroom
Noise: read the setting, not the headline
The same Levoit is 19 dB on its lowest fan and 45 dB at full power, so a single number on a box tells you little. Look for the figure at the setting you will sleep on, and expect evaporative units, which use a fan, to get louder as they work harder. Ultrasonic and evaporative units also sound different; our ultrasonic vs evaporative comparison covers the trade-offs.
Light: night lights, displays and sleep modes
A glowing display a few feet from the pillow matters more than most spec sheets admit. Of these picks, the Classic 160 has no display, the Superior Studio turns its display off in Sleep Mode, the Dreo HM311's ambient light switches off, and the Vornado dims itself to the room. Warm mist units are a different story: the Vicks V745 manual says its night light comes on whenever the switch is set to Hi or Low.
One tank, one night
Divide the tank by the run time to get the average output at the low setting, then multiply by 8. Every pick here uses about 1 liter or less in an 8-hour night on its lowest setting, so any of them lasts the night. The catch is that the quietest setting is also the weakest: in a large, very dry room, low may not hold 40% until morning, and you will hear the unit work harder on a higher setting.
Size it to the room
Multiply length by width: a 12 by 14 foot bedroom is 168 sq ft, a 14 by 16 foot primary bedroom 224 sq ft. Pick a unit rated for at least that area. A much bigger unit is not better in a closed bedroom. EPA advises not humidifying above 50%, and CPSC says levels above 60% let moisture condense on surfaces where bacteria and fungi can grow. See the ideal indoor humidity level.
White dust and water
EPA says ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers can disperse minerals and microorganisms into the air, while evaporative and steam units generally disperse less, if any. With an ultrasonic unit by the bed, use distilled water or expect a fine white film on the nightstand and electronics. See distilled vs tap water.
Where to put a humidifier in a bedroom
- On a firm, level, water-resistant surface. A tray or mat protects a wooden nightstand.
- Away from walls. Levoit's Superior Studio and Classic 160 manuals and Dreo's HM311 manual ask for at least 12 inches; Honeywell's HCM-350 manual asks for 6 inches from walls and furniture.
- Mist away from the bed. Honeywell says not to direct the moisture flow at people, walls or furniture.
- Warm mist units well away from the bed. The Vicks V745 and Honeywell HWM445 manuals both say at least four feet from the bedside and 12 inches from the wall, and EPA warns that steam and boiling water may cause burns.
- Check in the morning. Honeywell says to turn the humidifier off if moisture forms on the inside of the windows.
What to skip
- A warm mist unit on the nightstand. The four-foot rule above rules it out.
- A display that cannot go dark, if light keeps you awake. Check the manual, not the listing photos.
- Essential oils in the tank. The Superior Studio manual says not to add them, and Vicks and Honeywell forbid additives in the water. Use the separate pad or cup only where a unit has one.
- Health promises on listings. Ignore claims that a unit relieves congestion; for what moist air does and does not do, see our humidifier for congestion guide.
Keeping a bedroom humidifier clean
EPA's routine is to empty the tank, wipe it dry and refill it every day, and clean portable units every third day. A unit by the bed gets used every night, so build the daily refill into your evening. The steps and each maker's amounts are in how to clean a humidifier.
For a child's bedroom
EPA says to keep steam vaporizers out of children's reach and warns that steam and boiling water may cause burns. For the choice, see cool mist vs warm mist and the best humidifiers for babies, which covers nursery picks separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is it OK to sleep with a humidifier on every night?
Yes, if it is clean and the room stays in range. EPA advises not humidifying above 50% and emptying, drying and refilling portable units daily. Check the room with a hygrometer in the morning, and turn the unit down if moisture forms on the inside of the windows.
Where should I put a humidifier in my bedroom?
On a firm, water-resistant surface, 6 to 12 inches from walls as the manual says, with the mist pointed away from the bed and walls. Vicks and Honeywell say a warm mist unit belongs at least four feet from the bedside.
What size humidifier do I need for a bedroom?
Match the maker's rated room size to your floor area. A 12 by 14 foot bedroom is 168 sq ft, which the Levoit Classic 160 (rated 219 sq ft) covers; a 300 sq ft room needs something like the Dreo HM311, and a large primary bedroom the Superior Studio (600) or Vornado EVDC300 (560).
Which is quieter, an evaporative or an ultrasonic humidifier?
It depends on the model and the setting. Levoit rates its evaporative Superior Studio at 19 dB on low but 45 dB at full fan, while the ultrasonic picks here are rated 26 to 28 dB. Makers measure differently, so compare figures at the setting you will sleep on.
What humidity should my bedroom be at night?
Between 30 and 50%. EPA advises not going above 50%, and CPSC says above 60% moisture can condense on surfaces. Levoit's Superior Studio defaults to 50% in Sleep Mode.
Can I put a warm mist humidifier on my nightstand?
Not according to the makers. The Vicks V745 and Honeywell HWM445 manuals say to place them at least four feet from the bedside and 12 inches from the wall, and EPA warns that steam and boiling water may cause burns.
