The best humidifier for most homes is the Vornado EVDC500. It is an evaporative unit, so it does not spread the white mineral dust EPA associates with ultrasonic humidifiers, it holds 2 gallons in two easy-to-clean tanks, and Vornado rates it at 3.5 gallons a day for rooms up to 840 square feet with a DC motor that draws as little as 1 watt. For a whole open-plan house, the AIRCARE MA1201 console is rated at up to 12 gallons a day.
This guide is for anyone fighting dry winter air in a bedroom, living room or whole house. We chose picks on each maker's rated output or coverage, tank size, the type (evaporative, ultrasonic or warm mist), ongoing costs such as wicks and distilled water, cleaning, and warranty, and we cite EPA's humidifier guidance throughout. Whatever you buy, keep indoor humidity at 30 to 50%, as EPA advises.

Best overall
Vornado EVDC500 Energy Smart Evaporative Humidifier
The best all-round humidifier for a living room or large bedroom: evaporative, low power and easy to clean.
- Type
- Evaporative
- Tank
- 2 gal (two 1-gal tanks)
- Rated coverage
- Up to 840 sq ft (Vornado)
- Warranty
- 5-year satisfaction guarantee
Pros
- Rated 3.5 gallons of output in 24 hours (Vornado)
- As little as 1 watt in Energy Smart mode (Vornado)
- No white dust, because minerals stay in the wick (EPA on evaporative units)
Cons
- Wicks to replace; Vornado lists a 2-pack at $14.99
- Fan noise; Vornado publishes no decibel figure
- Too large for a nightstand
Vornado's EVDC500 uses a fan to pull air through a wet wick, the evaporative method EPA says is not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals. That makes it the easiest choice for homes with hard water, since you can use tap water without coating the furniture in white dust. Its two 1-gallon tanks are lighter to carry and easier to scrub than one big tank.
Vornado rates it for up to 840 square feet (the Amazon listing claims 1,000) and says its DC motor is up to 90% more efficient than comparable Vornado AC-motor humidifiers. An electronic humidistat holds the level you set. Skip it for a small bedroom, where the Honeywell HCM-350 fits better, and if fan noise bothers you, look at an ultrasonic model. Best for a whole house
AIRCARE MA1201 Console Evaporative Humidifier
The portable humidifier that moves the most water: for open-plan and two-story homes.
- Type
- Evaporative console
- Tank
- 3.5 gal (manual)
- Rated coverage
- Up to 3,600+ sq ft, tight construction (manual)
- Warranty
- 2-year limited
Pros
- Up to 12 gallons per 24 hours, rated to ANSI/AHAM HU-1 (manual)
- Digital humidistat, 4 fan speeds and casters
- 80 W rated power (manual)
Cons
- Large: about 20.5 x 21.5 x 14.5 in (per the Amazon listing)
- MAF1 wick every 30 to 60 days of use (manual)
- A lot of water to empty and clean
The MA1201 is a rolling cabinet that AIRCARE rates for up to 3,600+ square feet in a home with tight construction and 8-foot ceilings. Placed near a cold air return, as AIRCARE suggests, it can lift humidity across an open floor plan from one spot. Its manual recommends starting at 30 to 40% and not exceeding 50%, and lowering the setting as outdoor temperatures fall to avoid condensation.
The price of that output is maintenance: a new MAF1 wick each season and every 30 to 60 days of operation, a vinegar descale and a bleach rinse at each wick change, and AIRCARE's bacteriostat in each refill. Skip it for a single room. More in our AIRCARE MA1201 review.
Best for bedrooms
Honeywell HCM-350 Cool Moisture Humidifier
A proven evaporative bedroom humidifier with a long run time and a dishwasher-safe tank.
- Type
- Evaporative with UV
- Tank
- 1.1 gal
- Rated coverage
- Medium rooms (Honeywell)
- Warranty
- 3 years
Pros
- Up to 24 hours per fill on low (Honeywell)
- Dishwasher-safe tank
- No heating element and no mist
Cons
- Filter A wick every 30 to 60 days (Honeywell)
- Fan sound at higher speeds
- Honeywell's store lists the white version as discontinued
The HCM-350 holds 1.1 gallons and runs up to 24 hours on low, according to Honeywell's licensed store, with three speeds and a 60-watt rating. As an evaporative design it suits hard-water homes, and the dishwasher-safe tank makes EPA's every-third-day cleaning easier to stick to. It is a cool unit with no heating element, the type the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends for children, according to CHOP.
Honeywell's store now lists the white HCM-350 as discontinued in favor of the HEV320W, but the black HCM350B was still sold by Amazon when we checked. Skip it if you need silence. See our Honeywell HCM-350 review.
Best smart humidifier
Levoit Classic 300S Smart Ultrasonic Humidifier
A large-tank ultrasonic with a humidity sensor and app control, for people who want it to run itself.
- Type
- Ultrasonic, smart
- Tank
- 6 L
- Rated coverage
- 505 sq ft (per the Amazon listing)
- Warranty
- Levoit replacement support (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Humidity sensor with auto mode (per the Amazon listing)
- Up to 60 hours per fill (per the Amazon listing)
- No wick to replace
Cons
- Ultrasonic: needs distilled water to avoid white dust (EPA)
- App features depend on Levoit's VeSync service
- Larger than basic tabletop units
The Classic 300S is the smart sibling of the Levoit Classic 200. Its Amazon listing describes a 6-liter top-fill tank, up to 60 hours of run time, coverage of 505 square feet, an auto mode that adjusts output from its humidity sensor, a sleep mode and app and voice control. Auto mode is the main advantage over basic ultrasonic units: it stops the over-humidifying that leads to window condensation and, as EPA warns, to mold and dust mites.
Like every ultrasonic, it turns tap-water minerals into white dust, so plan on distilled water. Skip it if you have hard water and do not want to buy distilled; choose an evaporative pick instead.
Best warm and cool mist
Levoit LV600S Smart Warm and Cool Mist Humidifier
For adults who like warm mist in winter, with a cool setting for the rest of the year.
- Type
- Ultrasonic, warm or cool
- Tank
- 6 L
- Rated coverage
- 753 sq ft (per the Amazon listing)
- Warranty
- 2 years (per the Amazon listing)
Pros
- Warm and cool mist in one unit
- Sleep mode under 28 dB with display lights off (per the Amazon listing)
- Humidity sensor with auto mode and app control
Cons
- Warm water and steam can burn; keep away from children (EPA, CHOP)
- Heating uses more power than cool mist
- Ultrasonic mist carries minerals; use distilled water
The LV600S offers both warm and cool mist from a 6-liter tank, with a humidity sensor, auto mode and app control, according to its Amazon listing, which also rates it for a 753-square-foot room and gives a sleep mode under 28 dB. Some people find warm mist more comfortable in a cold bedroom. The trade-off is safety and power: EPA says steam and boiling water may cause burns and steam units should be kept out of reach of children, and CHOP cites the AAP in recommending cool mist for kids.
Use the cool setting in any child's room, or choose a cool-only unit. See cool mist vs warm mist.
Best budget
Pure Enrichment MistAire Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier
A small, quiet, inexpensive humidifier for a bedroom, nursery or office up to 250 square feet.
- Type
- Ultrasonic
- Tank
- 1.7 L
- Rated coverage
- Up to 250 sq ft (Pure Enrichment)
- Warranty
- 5 years
Pros
- Up to 25 hours on low (Pure Enrichment)
- Optional night light; auto shut-off
- $39.99 list price and a 5-year warranty
Cons
- No humidity sensor
- Small tank on high setting
- Needs distilled water to avoid white dust
Pure Enrichment's MistAire is a tabletop ultrasonic unit with a 1.7-liter tank, high and low settings, a 360° nozzle, an optional night light and auto shut-off when the water runs low or the tank is removed. At its $39.99 list price it is the cheapest way to add moisture to a small room, and its 5-year warranty is longer than most rivals here.
With no humidistat, pair it with a hygrometer and keep the room at 30 to 50%. Skip it for anything larger than a small bedroom. See our MistAire review.
How we chose
- Rated output or coverage from the maker. We used each maker's own figure (Vornado's 840 square feet rather than a listing's 1,000) and say when a figure comes only from an Amazon listing.
- Type. EPA says ultrasonic and impeller units are very efficient at dispersing tap-water minerals as white dust, while evaporative and steam units are not expected to. That shapes who each pick suits.
- Ongoing costs. Wicks for evaporative units, distilled water for ultrasonic ones, and electricity for warm mist.
- Cleaning. EPA advises emptying and refilling portable units daily and cleaning every third day. Big openings, few parts and dishwasher-safe tanks make that realistic.
- Humidity control. A built-in humidistat or sensor helps avoid going above 50%, EPA's ceiling.
Buying guide
Evaporative, ultrasonic or warm mist
| Type | How it works | White dust | Burn risk | Ongoing cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Evaporative | Fan blows air through a wet wick | Not expected (EPA) | None | Wicks |
| Ultrasonic | Vibrations make a cool mist | Yes with tap water (EPA) | None | Distilled water |
| Warm mist (steam) | Heats water to steam | Not expected (EPA) | Yes (EPA, CHOP) | Electricity |
See ultrasonic vs evaporative and cool mist vs warm mist for the details.
Size it to the room, not the biggest number
An oversized humidifier in a small room pushes humidity past 50% and causes condensation; CHOP warns that an oversized unit can cause condensation that fosters bacteria and mold. Match the maker's coverage figure to your room, and in a drafty or very cold house, size up modestly rather than a lot.
Humidity control
EPA advises not humidifying above 50% and its mold guidance recommends 30 to 50%, below 60% at most. A unit with a humidistat or sensor manages this for you. Without one, use a hygrometer and turn it down when windows fog. See the ideal indoor humidity level.
Water
EPA recommends water labeled distilled for humidifiers, noting that distillation is the most effective way to remove minerals and that spring, artesian or mineral water has not been treated to remove them. With an evaporative unit, tap water is workable because minerals stay in the wick, but the wick clogs faster. See distilled vs tap water.
Cleaning
Stagnant water and scale grow microbes, and EPA notes that breathing mist contaminated with them has been implicated in a type of lung inflammation. Empty and refill daily, clean every third day following the maker's instructions, and dry the unit fully before storing it. See humidifier mold prevention.
What to skip
- Warm mist in a child's room. CHOP cites the AAP in recommending cool mist for children because vaporizers can cause burns.
- Ultrasonic units with hard tap water, unless you will buy distilled water.
- Oils in the water tank. Use only an aroma pad or tray if the maker provides one, such as the Levoit Classic 200's aroma pad, and follow the manual.
- Running a humidifier with no way to measure humidity. It is easy to overshoot.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best type of humidifier?
For most homes, an evaporative humidifier, because EPA says evaporative units are not expected to spread tap-water minerals as white dust. Ultrasonic units are quieter but need distilled water.
What size humidifier do I need?
Match the maker's coverage figure to your room. The Vornado EVDC500 is rated up to 840 square feet, a small unit like the Pure Enrichment MistAire up to 250, and the AIRCARE MA1201 up to 3,600+ in a tight house.
What humidity level should I set?
EPA advises not humidifying above 50% and recommends 30 to 50% indoors. Lower the setting if windows or walls show condensation.
Is a cool mist or warm mist humidifier better?
Cool mist for most homes and any child's room. CHOP cites the AAP in recommending cool mist for children because warm mist and steam can cause burns.
How often should I clean a humidifier?
EPA advises emptying, drying and refilling portable humidifiers daily and cleaning them every third day, following the maker's directions.
Do I need distilled water in a humidifier?
In an ultrasonic unit, yes if your water is hard, because EPA says ultrasonic units disperse tap-water minerals. Evaporative units can use tap water, but the wick clogs faster.
