The best HVAC filter for most homes is a MERV 13 pleated filter that fits your slot snugly, and our pick is the Filtrete MPR 1900, which 3M labels MERV 13. EPA advises choosing a filter rated at least MERV 13, or as high as your system will accommodate, and consulting an HVAC technician if you are unsure. MERV 13 filters must capture at least 50% of the smallest particles in the ASHRAE test (0.3 to 1 micron) and at least 85% of 1 to 3 microns.

Not every furnace copes with MERV 13: EPA warns that some fans cannot handle higher-resistance filters without losing airflow. If yours struggles, a MERV 11 such as the Filtrete MPR 1000 is the step down. We chose picks on the MERV rating, the brand's own MPR or MERV labeling, actual size, pack size, change interval and availability from Amazon in the common 16x25x1 size (most are sold in many sizes).

1

Best overall

Filtrete MPR 1900 MERV 13 Filter, 16x25x1 (2-pack)

A MERV 13 1-inch filter from 3M, sold by Amazon, for most forced-air systems that can take MERV 13.

MERV
13 (MPR 1900, per Filtrete)
Size
16x25x1 nominal; 15.62 x 24.62 x 0.78 in actual
Pack
2
Change interval
At least every 90 days (Filtrete)

Pros

  • Meets EPA's MERV 13 suggestion
  • Filtrete states a 62% capture of 0.3 to 1 micron particles
  • Filtrete app sets 30, 60 or 90-day reminders

Cons

  • MERV 13 can restrict airflow in some systems (EPA)
  • Small 2-pack
  • Change more often with pets or construction dust

Filtrete's listing labels this filter MPR 1900 and MERV 13, states a 62% capture rate for microparticles of 0.3 to 1 micron, and claims the highest airflow of any brand's residential 1-inch retail MERV 13 filter based on California Energy Commission data. We cannot verify the airflow claim, but the MERV 13 label is what EPA's guidance asks for, and 3M publishes the actual size (15.62 by 24.62 by 0.78 inches for the 16x25x1), so you can check the fit.

Skip it if your system is old, has a restrictive return or already struggles to heat or cool; EPA says not all fans can accommodate high-efficiency filters. Step down to MERV 11 or ask an HVAC technician. See whether a MERV 13 upgrade is worth it.

2

Best value MERV 13

Nordic Pure MERV 13 Pleated Filter, 16x25x1 (6-pack)

A six-pack of MERV 13 filters labeled by MERV directly, made in the USA, for regular changers.

MERV
13
Size
16x25x1 nominal; 15.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 in actual
Pack
6
Change interval
Follow your system; EPA says typically 60 to 90 days

Pros

  • Six filters per pack
  • MERV rated directly; Nordic Pure says MERV 13 equals MPR 2200 to 2400
  • Made in the USA (per the Amazon listing)

Cons

  • Actual size is slightly smaller than Filtrete's; check your slot
  • No published small-particle percentage on the listing
  • Same airflow caution as any MERV 13

Nordic Pure rates its filters by MERV, which makes comparison easy, and its listing gives a 15.5 by 24.5 by 0.75-inch actual size for the 16x25x1. Nordic Pure says its MERV 13 is equivalent to MPR 2200 to 2400, a higher MPR figure than Filtrete assigns to its own MERV 13 (MPR 1900), which shows why brand-to-brand MPR conversions are only approximate.

A six-pack suits anyone who changes filters every two to three months, as EPA says makers typically suggest. Skip it if your slot measures closer to 15.75 inches; a filter that leaves a gap lets air bypass it, which EPA says significantly decreases effectiveness.

3

Best if MERV 13 is too restrictive

Filtrete MPR 1000 MERV 11 Filter, 16x25x1 (4-pack)

A MERV 11 step down for systems that lose airflow with MERV 13.

MERV
11 (MPR 1000, per Filtrete)
Size
16x25x1 nominal; 15.68 x 24.68 x 0.81 in actual
Pack
4
Change interval
At least every 90 days (Filtrete)

Pros

  • MERV 11 captures at least 85% of 3 to 10 micron particles (EPA's MERV table)
  • Four-pack
  • Filtrete labels it asthma and allergy friendly certified (per the Amazon listing)

Cons

  • Only at least 20% of 0.3 to 1 micron particles at MERV 11
  • Below EPA's MERV 13 suggestion
  • Still pleated; very restrictive systems may need MERV 8

EPA's MERV table shows MERV 11 capturing at least 20% of 0.3 to 1 micron particles, 65% of 1 to 3 microns and 85% of 3 to 10 microns, against 50%, 85% and 90% for MERV 13. That makes MERV 11 a solid filter for dust, pollen and pet dander but weaker on smoke-size particles. Filtrete labels this one MPR 1000 and MERV 11.

Choose it if a MERV 13 makes your system noisy, slows airflow from the registers or triggers comfort complaints, which EPA lists among the risks of a filter the fan cannot handle. Skip it if your system takes MERV 13 without trouble. See MERV 8 vs 11 vs 13.

4

Best basic

Aerostar MERV 8 Pleated Filter, 16x25x1 (6-pack)

An inexpensive MERV 8 six-pack for rentals, construction dust or systems that need minimal resistance.

MERV
8
Size
16x25x1 nominal; 15.75 x 24.75 x 0.75 in actual
Pack
6
Change interval
Follow your system; EPA says typically 60 to 90 days

Pros

  • MERV 8 captures at least 70% of 3 to 10 micron particles (EPA)
  • Low cost per filter
  • Pleated, unlike fiberglass panel filters

Cons

  • Captures at least 20% of 1 to 3 micron particles and no stated minimum for 0.3 to 1
  • Not for smoke or fine-particle concerns
  • Third-party brand

EPA's technical summary says panel filters with MERV 1 to 4 mainly protect equipment rather than people, while pleated filters start around MERV 5. A pleated MERV 8 is the basic step up: EPA's table puts it at 70% or more of 3 to 10 micron particles and 20% of 1 to 3 microns. Aerostar's listing gives a 15.75 by 24.75 by 0.75-inch actual size.

It suits a rental, a home during renovation (when filters load quickly), or an older system that cannot take more resistance. Skip it if anyone in the home has allergies or if wildfire smoke reaches you; go to MERV 11 or 13.

5

Best 4-inch media filter

AprilAire 413 MERV 13 Filter, 16x25x4

A MERV 13 4-inch filter for AprilAire whole-house air cleaner cabinets.

MERV
13
Size
16x25x4
Pack
1
Change interval
Follow AprilAire's guidance for your cabinet

Pros

  • Deep pleats; EPA says thicker filters can reach high MERV with low resistance
  • Made for a sealed AprilAire cabinet fit
  • MERV 13

Cons

  • Only fits AprilAire 16x25 cabinets; not a 1-inch slot
  • Higher cost per filter
  • Requires the cabinet, usually installed by a contractor

If your system has a 4 or 5-inch media cabinet, use its matching filter. EPA's technical summary notes that thicker, deeply pleated filters let makers reach high MERV ratings with low airflow resistance, which is why media cabinets are the usual way to run MERV 13 on systems that struggle with 1-inch MERV 13. AprilAire's 413 is the MERV 13 filter for its 16x25 cabinets.

Skip it unless you have an AprilAire cabinet in that size; for a 20x25 cabinet the AprilAire 213 is the match. See the best whole-house air filters.

Best smart filter

Filtrete Smart Air Filter MPR 1500 MERV 12, 16x25x1 (2-pack)

A MERV 12 filter with a Bluetooth sensor that tracks filter life from airflow and run time.

MERV
12 (MPR 1500, per Filtrete)
Size
16x25x1 nominal; 15.71 x 24.72 x 0.78 in actual
Pack
2
Change interval
App alert based on airflow and usage (Filtrete)

Pros

  • Sensor tracks filter life from airflow and usage, not just time (per the Amazon listing)
  • Filtrete states 54% capture of 0.3 to 1 micron particles
  • Alexa notifications and reorders

Cons

  • MERV 12, a step below EPA's MERV 13 suggestion
  • Bluetooth range means checking near the furnace
  • Costs more than a plain MPR 1500

Filtrete's listing says the attached Bluetooth sensor tracks filter life based on airflow and usage, so the app alerts you when the filter actually needs changing rather than on a fixed schedule. That addresses the most common filter problem: EPA says an overloaded filter will not work well and can push air around it. The filter itself is labeled MPR 1500 and MERV 12, with a stated 54% capture of 0.3 to 1 micron particles.

Skip it if you already change filters on schedule; a plain MERV 13 filters better. See smart HVAC filter monitors.

How we chose

  • MERV first. EPA advises at least MERV 13, or as high as your system accommodates. MERV comes from ASHRAE Standard 52.2.
  • The brand's own labeling. We used MERV as each brand states it. Filtrete pairs MPR 1000 with MERV 11, MPR 1500 with MERV 12 and MPR 1900 with MERV 13 on its listings.
  • Actual size. EPA says the filter should fit snugly so air does not leak around it, and you should not have to bend or crush it.
  • Pack and interval, because EPA says filters work only if replaced on the maker's schedule, typically 60 to 90 days.

Will your system handle MERV 13?

EPA's technical summary says not all HVAC fans can accommodate high-efficiency filters without reducing airflow to the point where heating or cooling capacity is lost, which can lead to comfort problems and component failure. It also notes that resistance generally, but not necessarily, rises with MERV, because deeper pleats, thicker filters and electrostatically charged media can deliver high MERV with low resistance. A technician can measure your system's static pressure.

Fit and installation

Measure the slot, not the old filter's label. Nominal sizes are rounded: Filtrete's 16x25x1 is 15.62 by 24.62 by 0.78 inches, Nordic Pure's 15.5 by 24.5 by 0.75. EPA says to install filters with the arrow pointing in the direction of airflow and to avoid gaps that let air bypass the filter. See custom HVAC filter sizes.

The system has to run

EPA notes that furnace filters only clean air while the fan runs, and that systems typically run less than 25% of the time; running the fan longer increases electricity use and can reduce humidity control in summer. For a bedroom, a portable HEPA purifier may help more. See the best air purifiers.

What to skip

  • Fiberglass panel filters if you care about air quality; EPA says MERV 1 to 4 filters mainly protect equipment.
  • Filters that produce ozone. EPA advises avoiding air cleaners and furnace filters that intentionally produce ozone.
  • MERV 14 to 16 in a 1-inch slot without a technician's check; EPA says they typically have higher resistance than medium-efficiency filters of the same thickness.
  • Stretching the change interval. See the HVAC filter replacement schedule.

Frequently asked questions

What MERV rating should I use for my home?

EPA advises at least MERV 13, or as high as your system will accommodate. If your system loses airflow or becomes noisy with MERV 13, step down to MERV 11 and ask an HVAC technician.

Is MERV 13 bad for my furnace?

Not for most systems, but EPA says some fans cannot handle higher-resistance filters without losing airflow and capacity. A technician can measure static pressure to be sure.

What is the difference between MPR and MERV?

MERV is ASHRAE's standard scale; MPR is 3M's proprietary scale for Filtrete. Filtrete labels MPR 1000 as MERV 11, MPR 1500 as MERV 12 and MPR 1900 as MERV 13.

How often should I change my HVAC filter?

Follow the maker's recommendation. EPA says makers typically suggest every 60 to 90 days, and to change it more often if it looks heavily soiled. Filtrete says at least every 90 days.

Why is my 16x25x1 filter smaller than 16 by 25 inches?

Sizes are nominal. Filtrete's 16x25x1 is 15.62 by 24.62 by 0.78 inches. Measure your slot and match the actual size so air cannot bypass the filter.

Are 4-inch filters better than 1-inch filters?

They can reach high MERV with lower airflow resistance, as EPA's technical summary notes, and usually last longer. They need a media cabinet sized for them.
